SCRIBE 27 has long been the pen name used by C. R. JAHN for various Occult manuscripts. My first such book, ARCANE LORE, came about as a collaboration with a mysterious fellow that everyone simply called "Melvin." The Hill Folk of Broome County all said Melvin was batshit crazy and did black magick in an old tarpaper shack surrounded by boobytraps way up some old logging trail. They'd dare each other to go up there occasionally, usually after many beers, but would invariably chicken out as soon as they saw that shack and run home. On a lark, I went up there by myself one afternoon... saw an ancient Willies pickup and what looked like a pipe bomb hanging on the front door, which I politely knocked on, but no-one seemed to be home so I left. A few months later, I was at some New Age shoppe in the big city of Binghamton, when this crazy lookin dishevelled dude in overalls and a weird pointed hat walked over and said, "I know you." I'd never seen this guy before in my life. "I done saw you creepin on my shit through the crosshairs of my 30-30.. ain't no-one never knocked on the door before." Then he extended his hand and I shook it. "Come back this weekend... and bring a bottle of Jim Beam." And that is how I met Melvin. After I'd been a regular visitor at his shack for a few months, he handed me a small gym bag saying, "I don't need this no more... reckon bein' a writer you might find a use for it. I need to go South, you won't see me again." When I got home I opened it to find a reground Ontario dagger and a few spiral bound notebooks. When I returned the following weekend, the Willies was gone and that shack had been burnt to the ground... he didn't want no-one else ever living there. The notebooks were filled with his messy handwriting in black ballpoint with lotsa words scribbled out and other things written in the margins. Some was completely illegible, other parts he'd gone over in our conversations, but quite a bit was new to me... some made sense, some didn't. Between our conversations, those three notebooks, and several years of fully immersive study of over a hundred obscure books I'd requested via Inter Library Loan, eventually I put together the manuscript for ARCANE LORE, intended mostly as a slap in the face to the many gurus and cult leaders prevalent in the 1990s New Age scene that I'd interacted with in my quest for secret knowledge. It's by no means a great book, but it's a good introduction to complex topics. My author website is: crjahn.com
