Sally Mansfield Abbott was born in Wellington, New Zealand in 1948 and named after New Zealand author Katherine Mansfield, her mother's favorite writer. She grew up in New Zealand, Thailand, Switzerland, Myanmar, and India, as well as the U.S. She attended UC Berkeley and has a Masters in Creative Writing from San Francisco State University. She has taught classes on Goddess Worship in Prehistory, as well as Virginia Woolf and the Female Hero Journey in Contemporary Fiction at a number of Bay Area colleges and universities. She has reviewed fiction and nonfiction for the SAN FRANCISCO CHRONICLE, and her essays have been included in environmental publications. She is an anti-war activist and a poet.
