The majority of Rita Kepner’s published writings have been non-fiction -- as writer, editor of one weekly newspaper and managing editor of another with various pieces published in local, national and international publications. She produced informational and news broadcast videos, earned national photojournalism awards for newsletter writing and editing and radio program awards for on-air contributions. “Christmas Guitar” was her first published fictional short story, rooted in reality. “Through Fire and Water: True Stories of Rita Marie Matthiesen as told to Laura Callender” is her recently published book (written under her new pen name). One reviewer of the book noted: “One is swept with her through the latter half of the previous century and early years of this, marveling at the picaresque ride--her rich, energy-charged adventure tales that unfold and keep unfolding to reveal her inspirations and wonder as an artist; her hard-working ethic as a professional; her passion and drive for social justice; her unyielding determination to stand fast for a woman's right--and all human beings' right--to equal treatment, and the compassion, brilliance and common sense she brings to her stints as a disaster worker, pushing out life-saving and life-restoring information to her fellow citizens and human beings even as she is witness to all their pain and sorrow.” Mark Clemens
