Captain Paul Lobo was born on Long Island. He graduated from SUNY Maritime College in New York City with a BS in Marine Transportation, an unlimited Third Mates License and an ensigns commission in the U.S. Navy Reserves in 1969. He was honorably discharged in 1986 as a Lieutenant-Commander. After sailing on his Coast Guard unlimited licenses he became the youngest ship pilot ever to be appointed by the State of California's oldest commission since 1850. During his 31 year career, as an unlimited tonnage ship pilot and docking master, he piloted well over 6100 ships of all sorts from out on the treacherous waters of the Pacific Ocean into every port and berth on San Francisco Bay's 200 miles of waterways, one of the world's toughest harbors to pilot gigantic ships. He piloted everything from yachts, to oil rigs, to The Love Boat to the aircraft carrier, USS Enterprise. After a life at sea Captain Lobo decided to write about something he knows a lot about. His book, Crossing the Bar, is a novel about his interesting and dangerous career where one of his partners drowned, another was almost killed when the ship he was on exploded. Captain Lobo also participated in an epic sea rescue during hurricane force winds and seas during Christmas 1977. Carl Nolte of the San Francisco Chronicle called his book, "Fascinating." It was voted top ten non-fiction novels by gCaptain, the world's largest read nautical blog. Captain Lobo and his wife split their time between Palm Desert, California and Falmouth on Cape Cod.
