The authors of Prostate Cancer Survivors Speak Their Minds offer two differing perspectives. Norman Morris presents the patient's perspective while Dr. Burnett presents the medical perspective. The patients who tell first person experiences were not chosen at random. Rather, each patient was selected to illustrate a specific medical issue.
Norman S. Morris is a former CBS News producer/writer with a long and distinguished career in major network broadcasting. He is a graduate of Northwestern and Temple Universities and a member of the Writers Guild of America.
At CBS News he played key roles in news programming and multiple times won major national awards for outstanding journalism. He was a recipient of Emmy and Peabody,Grammy and the Writers Guild of America awards. Prior to CBS, he began his career writing for newspapers and magazines, earned small broadcast market experience throughout the United States, joined NBC News and later the Voice of America.
While at CBS News, he worked as a producer/writer for Charles Kuralt on Sunday Morning with Charles Kuralt and On the Road with Charles Kuralt, seen on the CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.
In 1991, Morris started Morris Communications Group, Inc. serving the varied communications needs of corporate clients. He also became a contributing writer to many national magazines and an internet consultant to ABC News and a contributor to The Osgood File, heard on the CBS Radio Network. His many media projects included dramatic broadcast series for the A & E cable network and contributions to the Discovery Channel. He also served with the National Academy of Arts and Sciences as a judge for Emmy awards in various news categories.
He is the author of Television's Child, published in 1970 by Little, Brown and was recognized as one of the leading lecturers and early pioneers helping to promote better television programming for children.
Arthur L.Burnett II, MD is one of the world authorities in prostate cancer and a prominent visiting professor whose lectures are sought after by academic and medical centers around the globe.
He is the Patrick C. Walsh Professor of Urology, Cellular and Molecular Medicine at the Johns Hopkins' James Buchanan Brady Urological Institute in Baltimore. He is also the Brady Institute's Director of the Male Consultation Clinic, a leading member of the Johns Hopkins prostate surgical team and an established expert in erectile dysfunction, female urology, as well as the Director of the Basic Science Laboratory in Neuro-urology.
Dr. Burnett, known for his research accomplishments, is also recognized for original discoveries of nitric oxide-dependent biochemical mechanisms, work that paved the way for the development of Viagra for erectile dysfunction. In addition, Dr. Burnett oversees the National Institutes of Health funded laboratory in neuro-urology at Johns Hopkins.
Among Dr. Burnett's key research interests are the neurophysiology and vascular physiology of penile erection, and the pathophysiology of erectile dysfunction. He is a frequent contributor to the medical press and has written more than 200 original peer-reviewed articles and book chapters relating to his biomedical research and clinical activities. His work has appeared in many scientific journals, such as Science, Nature Medicine, and the Journal of Urology.
Dr. Burnett holds an undergraduate degree in biology from Princeton University and earned his medical degree at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a member of the American Urological Association, the Sexual Medicine Society of North America and the Society of Genitourinary Reconstructive Surgeons, and the International Society for Sexual and Impotence Research.
