About Moris Senegor: Moris Senegor is a neurosurgeon who has practiced in California’s Central Valley for more than thirty years. That, as he might jokingly tell you, is his “day job.” He became a published author in 2014 with the debut of his memoir Dogmeat, and has been a committed writer ever since. Cezar’s Last Mark, his fourth book, was published in 2022. It will not be his last. The rewards of reading Moris’s books: He writes in many genres. Moris followed his Dogmeat memoir with a collection of short stories, in Appassionata. Then he pivoted again, with Cezar’s Last Mark and its forerunner, Mark to Murder. They comprise the Mark Kent Mystery series, fast-paced thrillers with intricate plot lines. He has a worldly world view. Moris is Turkish, growing up in Istanbul and attending the English High School there. He immigrated with his family to the United States and headed to the University of Chicago, where he earned his undergraduate and medical degrees. Crossing between these two very different, East-West worlds has given Moris a highly tuned ear for language and dialogue, and a keen awareness of surroundings. His visual descriptions of, for example, the curious trulli homes in an Italian village and the cave houses in Turkey (Appassionata), and the sumptuous bookstore in Budapest (Mark to Murder) place you right there in the story. In fact, you often wish you were, indeed, right there! His perspective is unique. After reading Dogmeat, for example, you’ll know your way around San Francisco as if you lived there. Moris did live there as a neurosurgery resident at UCSF in 1986. Like many people, he fell in love with the city. But he saw in it something that few do: a remarkable resemblance to Istanbul. Moris and his wife now enjoy a second home there, not far from their residence in Stockton. He weaves his love of wine and symphonic music into some stories. These two pursuits add color and depth to his stories. He credits the expertise in wine that he’s developed to his first visit to Napa Valley, during his UCSF residency. “I was in a new world,” he writes in his memoir about his first visit to the famous California vineyards, “of a kind I had never imagined.” Be sure to check out his wine blog if you share this passion: https://www.morissenegor.com/blogs/. And if you love classical music, enjoy his podcasts: https://www.morissenegor.com/musical-conversations/musical-conversations-podcasts/ Not surprisingly, he has a surgical eye for detail. In Moris’s world, you’ll often find yourself in an operating room. Who better as your guide than an author whose “day job” is as a neurosurgeon? There are other details that Moris also puts his practiced eye to. Check out some of his beautiful photography on his Facebook page, where his moon shots have become a cult favorite: https://www.facebook.com/msenegor. The back story on the name of his imprint, Kaymak Press: With Cezar’s Last Mark, Moris began publishing under his own imprint of Kaymak Press. Pronounced “kai-muck,” kaymak is a Turkish word suggesting smooth and pleasing. It’s also the name of a clotted-cream dessert that’s buttery smooth. Moris likes his with a taste of honey. The dessert makes a cameo appearance in Cezar’s Last Mark. It’s one of many instances in his books where Moris describes exotic foods his characters are enjoying. Moris himself is a foodie, routinely patronizing restaurants in the San Francisco–Napa region as well as some in Europe. “I have frequented many Michelin-starred restaurants but also enjoy sampling street foods of many cultures, my native Turkey being foremost,” he says. You might well find yourself wanting to try the tasty temptations Moris serves up in his books.
