As an award-winning non-fiction author, Mardie Caldwell Christensen C.O.A.P. was inspired to turn her attention toward children’s stories after her seven-year-old granddaughter was diagnosed with stage 3 Wilm’s kidney cancer. Mardie found herself spinning tales at home to entertain and encourage young Ellie as she endured months of radiation and chemotherapy following the removal of both the football-sized tumor and her kidney. Mardie’s daily journaling helped document Ellie’s journey, emotions, and challenges, tracking these precious moments that helped with her first children’s book, “Ellie, The Brave Bald Fairy”. A heartfelt and inspiring story, this book gives hope to children of all ages facing cancer and other childhood illnesses. It has been well received by medical professionals and others who work with pediatric cancer patients such as the Wilms Cancer Foundation and Hope Scarves. As a Certified Open Adoption Practitioner, Mardie's previous books have centered around her work and experience in the field of open adoption. In 1986 she founded Lifetime Adoption and assists both pregnant women and prospective adoptive families as they come together to create an open adoption plan. Mardie’s adoption books have won many prestigious book awards, including the Benjamin Franklin Award (IBPA), Publishers’ Weekly Rising Star Award, and the iParenting Media Award. “So I Was Thinking About Adoption…” is in it’s fifth printing with over 65,000 copies in print. It is widely considered the best book on adoption as a pregnancy option. After so many years of assisting with adoption, Mardie saw a need for birth parent support, so she founded Lifetime Adoption Foundation, a 501(c)3 nonprofit charity, established to assist birth mothers in fulfilling their dreams through college scholarships. It has grown to now include offering grants to assist with special needs adoptions and direct support for women considering adoption. An inspiring speaker and author, Mardie often shares experiences and inspiration from her life’s work on podcasts and in print, such as U.S. News and World Report and Parenting Magazine. In addition, she is frequently called upon as an adoption expert in the media. You may have seen her on NBC’s The Today Show, CNN’s Larry King Live, The Marie Show, Dr. Laura, The Ricki Lake Show, Inside Edition, BBC, PBS, or Fox Network to name just a few. As a native Californian, Mardie grew up in the Central Valley. She is a visionary and has owned her own business since she was 18 years old. She recently was awarded “Business of The Year” by the Northern California Small Business Association. Locally, she was named “Role Model of the Year”. Her passion has always been to help women and children, turning a challenge into a way to help and inspire others. She often asks “What is the reason this is happening? What can I learn to help others with the same challenge?” She strives for excellence with out-of-the-box thinking. Mardie is currently living and writing in Nevada City, California. With her life’s work revolving around family, it is no surprise that Mardie finds her role as mother and grandmother to be the most important. She frequently shares personal insights on her blog and social media pages.
