Brief & Real: Lex Comber is a Geography Prof at Leeds (previously Leicester). He had another life which he will tell you about over a beer. He is the proud owner of a Bally 8-Ball Deluxe pinball and is often found having lunch at the Pakistan Community Centre or in his allotment if not working. The video describes the book to the publisher's sales team. ------------------ Long & Technical: Lex Comber is a Professor of Spatial Data Analytics at the University of Leeds. He did his PhD in Computer Science at the Macaulay Land Use Research Institute (now the Hutton Institute) before working as a post-doc with Pete Fisher at the University of Leicester. Lex's research develops methods to integrate and analyse the high volumes of spatial data that are being generated by and through our everyday lives in order to uncover hidden patterns and to provide spatial insight for social and environmental applications. He has worked in areas as diverse as demography, mathematics, statistics and computer science and his research has extended techniques in operations research (what to put where), graph theory (cluster detection in networks), heuristic searches (how to move intelligently through highly dimensional big data), remote sensing (novel approaches for classification), handling divergent data semantics (text mining and natural language processing), spatial statistics (quantifying spatial and temporal heterogeneity and autocorrelation in spatial processes). Most recently, he has developed methods for spatio-temporal prediction that specifically address the problems of statistical inference from big data.
