Born: Kilgore Texas 1934 Graduated: University of Arizona 1956 BA in Economics and Philosophy University of California Law 1959 JD. Practiced in the Bay area from 1960 to 1962 Practices in Tucson, AZ from 1962 and continuing now. The book originated from a teaching in Tucson in 1993 by the Dalai Lama. I love puns. While trying to get the book published, I was having dinner with friends including Dr. Howard Cutler, a psychiatrist and co-author with HH Dalai Lama, The Art of Happiness. He was telling us how hard it was to get a book published. The Art was rejected by four publishers before it was accepted by Riverside. He thought that was it for problems. However the editors thought they new more about Buddhism than the Dalai Lama. It took six months to convince them otherwise. After that he thought the book was ready. However he said you wouldn't believe the trouble they went through designing a cover. At that point I said, Howard I would have thought the most difficult thing would be choosing the packaging. He said, What do you mean? I replied that a book written by the Dalai Lama and a psychiatrist, you wouldn't know whether to laminate it or shrink wrap it. Despite that Howard's endorsement of my book appears on the cover.
