I am the author and editor of 8 non-fiction books all tied to New York City history. While my main focus has been pre-WWII, I have published guide books that cover current NYC places and people. My most recent book is "111 Places In The Bronx That You Must Not Miss" (Emons, June 2019). It is the first guide to The Bronx to include both hip hop history and Revolutionary War history in the same book. It has restaurants, churches, parks, historical locations, bars, culture, and crime. It was awarded the Apple Award for Outstanding Achievement in Non-Fiction Book Writing by the Guides Association of New York City in March 2020. My 2017 book, "World War I New York: A Guide to the City's Enduring Ties to the Great War," was releases for the centennial of the Great War. This book has nearly 200 location in NYC that are related to WWI. It also was awarded the Apple Award. The book is endorsed by the United States World War One Centennial Commission in Washington, D.C. In February 2016 Globe Pequot Press published "The Governors Island Explorer's Guide," the first guidebook to the island in New York Harbor. The book is packed with 8 maps, 100 photos, and 5 self-guided tours. Lyons Press published "The Algonquin Round Table New York: A Historical Guide" in February 2015. It is a guidebook to the 1920s world of the famous "Vicious Circle" with 100+ photos, maps, and rare material. "Under the Table: A Dorothy Parker Cocktail Guide" (Lyons Press) came out in November 2013. The book has 75 drink recipes with anecdotes, stories, and references to the Jazz Age and the Speakeasy Era. "Dorothy Parker Complete Broadway, 1918-1923" (Donald Books) was released in May 2014 and is the first collection of Parker's reviews as a Broadway critic. It is 150,000 words of Parker never collected before. I wrote the introduction, edited the reviews, and wrote an extensive notes section. "A Journey into Dorothy Parker's New York" (Roaring Forties Press) had a second edition released in 2013. I started researching Dorothy Parker in 1998 and this led me to start the Dorothy Parker Society in 1999. The book is 100 locations with 150 photos tied to the life of the writer, critic, wit and champion for social justice. The book is a literary travel guide for readers to follow in Mrs. Parker's footsteps. "The Lost Algonquin Round Table" (Donald Books, 2009) was co-edited with Nat Benchley, a grandson of Robert Benchley. This book is the first collection of writing by more than a dozen members of the "Vicious Circle" that met at the Algonquin Hotel. I had a wonderful time editing this book and choosing selections by Parker, Benchley, Heywood Broun, Edna Ferber, George S. Kaufman, Frank Sullivan, and many others. If you've only heard the one-liners and wisecracks associated with the group, this is a book to show you how they got their reputations as writers. For 22 years I have been leading walking tours and am a licensed NYC sightseeing guide. I give tours of places as diverse as Woodlawn Cemetery and Governors Island. In my spare time I co-own a vintage FDNY fire engine that my friend and I are restoring. I reside on the Upper West Side of Manhattan. I'm a member of the Guides Association of New York City and The Lambs. My motto is "I'd rather be a lamppost in New York than mayor anywhere else." If you love New York, you'll like what I'm writing about. Visit my site FitzpatrickAuthor.com.
