KELVIN I Jones – author profile
Kelvin I. Jones has been a prolific writer for a quarter of a century. Born in Kent in 1948, he is one of that breed of writers who is equally at home writing poetry, plays, biographies, reference works, short stories and novels; and, not least, books concerning Sherlock Holmes and his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle, subjects which have earned for him the reputation of being the UK's leading expert on Holmes and Doyle. He has published eight books about Sherlock Holmes, a trilogy about the sleuth entitled 'The Peculiar Persecution of Sherlock Holmes' and the first ever study on Conan Doyle's interest in spiritualism; as well as numerous short story pastiches and articles about the Victorian detective (see R De Waal's Universal Sherlock Holmes, online edition, 2000). He was for years a frequent contributor to the 'Journal of the Arthur Conan Doyle Society' on Doyle’s wok on spiritualism and psychic investigation. He has also now published Volume One of a planned four volume edition of Doyle's Spiritualist writings, which he has edited and annotated. The edition has been described by one commentator as 'the most rigorous examination of Conan Doyle's spiritualist career and writings ever attempted... an essential reference work.' He recently published Holmes' comprehensive work on Victorian criminology, 'The Art of Detection' as well as an edition of Holmes' much sought after monographs, 'Upon The Chaldean Roots of the Ancient Cornish Language' and 'Upon the Tracing of Footprints'. Because of his wide- ranging knowledge of Victorian crime, and his exhaustive research into the work of Conan Doyle, he has been described recently by an American Holmesian as 'A Master Sherlockian.' Ed Hoch, the renowned and award winning American crime writer, has said of his Sherlockian work: "Kelvin I Jones reveals a sensibility and knowledge of 19th Century literature that extends far beyond the world of Sherlock Holmes." (Introduction to original edition of ‘Sherlock and Porlock,’ Magico, 1984.) Published in November 2019 was 'The Sherlock Homes Ultimate Smoking Companion,' the definitive guide to Sherlock and his smoking obsession and habits; complete with 6 new Holmes stories, written in the authentic Conan Doyle style. Ebook and paperback editions are now available. A rare, hardback limited, signed edition of the book is available direct from the author. Contact him first on facebook page: 'Siger Holmes.' His most recent Holmes book is a study of the locations of the stories which Holmes visited, using the old South Eastern and South Western railways. A nostalgic and beautifully illustrated edition for Holmes enthusiasts.
The seminal critical work on the literary influences on Doyle's Holmes stories, 'Sherlock & Porlock' has now been reprinted in a very much enlarged edition of approx. 127pps. and includes an in-depth forensic investigation of Conan Doyle's creation, including an analysis of Doyle's debt to Edgar Allan Poe). Earlier this year his 'Annotated Hound of the Baskervilles' appeared on Amazon, a huge, wide ranging work which examines in depth the origins of the famous Gothic novel. A beautiful hardback edition is available direct from the author via his Siger Holmes Facebook page.
Jones is also the author of many supernatural stories, among them Carter's Occult Casebook, about a psychic Edwardian detective. Of his gothic tales, Francis King, the renowned novelist and critic, has written, "(Kelvin's work) piquantly suggest the work of a modern M.R. James." (Introduction to ‘Twenty Stories.’) His work is also cited in Ramsey Campbell's 'Meddling With Ghosts’ (2002), where he is described as one of the 'James gang.' He has recently published a biographical edition of the work of the lyrical Victorian poet and decadent, Ernest Dowson, and has also published an annotated six-volume edition of the anonymous Victorian, erotic memoirs of 'Walter', entitled 'Satyriasis.' He has also published a two volume edition of Krafft Ebing's ground breaking work on Victorian deviant sexuality, 'Psychopathia Sexualis.' He is now working on a definitive 2 volume, annotated collection of the supernatural ficton of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle.
Kelvin has written several books on folklore, including Occult Cornwall, as well as three fiction books for children - 'Odin's Eye,' 'Akenstone' and 'The Dark Entry' (the latter co-authored with wife Debbie). He was for 15 years the proprietor of Oakmagic Publications, a British folklore publisher. He has also published five occult crime novels, featuring a melancholic, ex-Met detective, John Bottrell. He is the creator of the Norwich based DCI Ketch, who features in several novels, which began with 'The Norwich Murders.' The series ends with 'Fall Out unto Death' (2019)
In addition to novels, he wrote ‘The Field’, a play for BBC Radio in 1995, and has had plays performed at The Barbican Theatre Plymouth and The Birmingham Arts Centre, as well as his one man show Mr Bottrell's Amazing Tales at the Acorn Theatre Penzance. His poetry includes 'Lyonesse', poems based on the myths and legends of Cornwall and the moving 'Omega,' a collection of poems about the survivors of a nuclear holocaust. Of his poetry, Bruce Kent, the peace activist, has written, "Kelvin has the gift of the extra eye. He can tell us what we need to see and never forget." (Introduction to Omega). He recently published a definitive edition of the poetical works and stories of the English decadent poet, Ernest Dowson; and a future project will be the publication of several volumes of Victorian erotica, originally published by Leonard Smithers, the publisher to the 'Decadent Poets' of the 1890's. The first volume in the series is an obscure short novel, written by Oscar Wilde.

Kelvin I Jones, an authority in the field of Sherlock Holmes studies, and author of ‘Conan Doyle & The Spirits’, has collated and edited a vast range of these materials, revealing a curious inconsistency in the great author. Sometimes critical, at other times ingenuous and open to accusations of a ‘soft approach’ to certain mediums, Doyle fluctuated and often appeared inconsistent. Yet his intentions were admirable. The edition carries extensive footnotes which explain the identities and issues relating to many of the people Doyle encountered.
VOLUME TWO OF THIS GROUNDBREAKING SERIES AVAILABLE BY END OF MAY 2020. The second volume will carry hitherto unknown information about Doyle's shortcomings as a psychic investigator.
NOW ALSO AVAILABLE.. ‘The Annotated Hound of the Baskervilles’ – 400 pages: Conan Doyle’s Gothic masterpiece, with 130 useful and explanatory footnotes to the original text, over 30 original Strand Magazine illustrations, copious appendices, chronologies and explanatory essays describing how the book was conceived and its background in myth and Celtic legend. Edited by Kelvin I Jones.
Kelvin is also a member of the Crime Writers Association, The Sherlock Holmes Society of London and The Bootmakers of Toronto (the Canadian Sherlock Holmes Society)
