John D. Witvliet is Director of the Calvin Institute of Christian Worship and professor of worship, theology, and congregational and ministry studies at Calvin University and Calvin Theological Seminary. His responsibilities include oversight of the Worship Institute’s practical and scholarly programs, including the annual Calvin Symposium on Worship, the CICW Liturgical Studies Series (Eerdmans), the Church at Worship Series (Eerdmans), CICW's repository of on-line resources, and the Vital Worship, Vital Preaching Grants Program, funded by Lilly Endowment.
His writings include scholarly works on the history and theology of worship, anthologies of liturgical texts and congregational songs, children's books on the meaning and purpose of worship, and books of practical wisdom for pastors, church musicians and artists, and other worship leaders.
A graduate of Calvin College, Dr. Witvliet holds graduate degrees in theology from Calvin Theological Seminary, in choral music from the University of Illinois, and the Ph.D. in liturgical studies and theology from the University of Notre Dame. He is a frequent lecturer at conferences on worship, and has published over 70 articles on worship-related topics, with particular interest in the doctrine of the Trinity, liturgical inculturation, liturgical aesthetics, worship and culture, worship practices of the fourth, sixteenth centuries, and twentieth centuries, and new and emerging patterns of worship worldwide. He has received awards for this work from the Hampton Ministers Conference, the National Association of Pastoral Musicians, All Belong, and Calvin University.
