J Arthur Heise was born in Berlin, Germany, on the eve of World War II and lived through the massive bombing of the city and the vicious Battle for Berlin in 1945. He clearly remembers the war starting approximately in late 1943. His family emigrated to the United States in 1953. He earned a B.S. in journalism from Syracuse University in 1961, followed by an M.S. in mass communications in 1962. After three years in the U.S. Air Force, he worked for the Buffalo News and the Associated Press in Berlin. He returned to Syracuse University to earn a Ph.D. in public administration from the university's prestigious Maxwell School of Public Affairs and Citizenship. In 1974 he joined the then brand new Florida International University (FIU) in Miami, one of Florida's state universities. Eventually he was asked by FIU's administration to build an outstanding school of journalism. It was fully accredited in record time, won national recognition and -- during Heise's time as dean -- produced six graduates who won journalism's most prestigious award, the Pulitzer Prize, two of them individually, the others as part of a team. In addition to Das Haus in East Berlin, Heise has published two other non-fiction books and numerous professional articles. His son is a prominent attorney in Miami. He has three grandchildren who were the inspiration for Das Haus in East Berlin. Now retired, he lives with his wife Simine in Hendersonville, North Carolina.
