Graham Field

With the modest winnings from a TV game show in 2009, Graham announced to the viewing public he would use the money to take a long motorcycle ride. For £700 he purchased KLR 650 off eBay, put his money where his mouth was and headed towards Mongolia. With a strong sense of direction, vague sense of balance and no sense of proportion, he travelled 15,000 miles, and then continued. ''To me it just seems normal but I'm beginning to realise that after 30 years of constant diary keeping, there has been little change in my lifestyle, perhaps the path I take is bordering on a more unique side of normality.'' Although having always led a very transient existence there’s never been a day without a motorcycle in his life, even if it is stored in a shed whilst cycling in China or hiking in the Himalayas. However these days the majority of his travel is solo, independent, overland, with a low budget and a motorbike. ''The destinations and goals change but the yarning remains. Currently there has been an insatiable wanderlust for wide-open spaces, the untouched terrains, nature at its most purist and humanity at its most vulnerable. Beyond the guide book, beyond the media generalizations, beyond the madding crowd, that’s where I like to ride; back in time and back again, the horse and cart, the seasonal appreciation and preparation.'' This passion for the wild was spawned in Alaska, grown in Kazakhstan, exposed in Siberia, scorched in Mexico and blown away in Iraq. Graham has a very readable style, combining wit and pensive observations from both inside and outside helmet. The reader rides with him to witness his anecdotes, admiration, distain, a little alcohol inspired wisdom but ultimately a brutal honesty. ''Having found the overlooked and unvisited I keep looking for more, the spaces in between, a constant craving for different natures in both environment and character.'' Graham's articles have been published in a variety of newspapers and magazines in both the UK and US; he also has a residency on Adventure Rider Radio RAW http://www.adventureriderradio.com/arr-raw-posts/ When not on the road he regularly does presentations and signings around the UK. My definition of 'Martyr' is 'not having a bacon sandwich' because everyone wants a bacon sandwich really, deep down inside, the smell, the taste, it's a universal craving. Even experienced by Rabbis and vegetarians...probably. And the best one I ever tasted comes out of my own kitchen. When palm trees or snowy mountains, extravagant architecture and ancient history lose their wow factor, it's time to go home for a bacon sandwich, enjoyed with a greater world knowledge and with a new appreciation for the simple things.''
