Donnie Pitchford decided to become a cartoonist at age five, and began pestering professional cartoonists by mail. Some actually responded with encouragement. Even though Pitchford majored in commercial art and art education, a career in broadcasting education delayed his cartooning goal until 2011 when he launched the "Lum and Abner" comic strip. He has contributed to a variety of comic books, magazines, and children's books since.
