Obrecht, M.D. graduated from the University Of Maryland School Of Medicine and did an internship in general surgery and residency in emergency medicine. She has been the medical director of a chemical dependency unit and is a professor at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center, where she has instructed in the fields of Family Practice and Addiction Medicine. Dr. Obrecht was in the first group of 500 physicians in the U.S. to become certified by the American Board of Addiction Medicine in 1986. Dr. Obrecht is a frequent speaker on addiction and recovery to physicians and other professionals and has published four books, one on Missionary Medicine, two on addiction and recovery and a new one on her hunting adventures. She welcomes any opportunity to teach others how to identify addiction and help addicts to find recovery. She enjoys hiking, climbing and hunting in the Colorado out of doors. Her third book, Who’s Your Higher Power? , Richer Press, 2013, is in some ways a sequel to her second book, From the Edge of the Cliff, which came out in early 2012. She says, "I write about what I know, specifically: alcoholism, addiction, and recovery". There are countless stumbling blocks keeping many of us, not just alcoholics and addicts, away from a constructive and rewarding relationship with a Higher Power. I know; after my own first year without alcohol and drugs, I was still having difficulty with the “G” word. Over thirty years later, I have a fulfilling and ever-growing relationship with God, thanks to the love and encouragement I found and continue to find from those in the 12 step meetings I attend. The thirty stories of alcoholics, addicts and family members in recovery, that make up my book, Who’s Your Higher Power? are diverse. The subtitle, Finding a God of Your Own Understanding, suggests what the book illustrates: one’s own belief in a Higher Power, must be just that, belief in a God of your own understanding. Yes, I Hunt! has been a long time coming. I began writing hunting stories twenty years ago and have just put this book together in 2018! I hope some of you will enjoy reading about how I progressed from vegetarian to hunter.
