Run Away was Alex's first novel and the idea for the story came after spending many anxious weeks sitting at the computer waiting for emails from her 18-year old son who was on his Gap Year travelling round South East Asia. This was all before the days of Facebook and twitter, but she's not sure accessing his Facebook page would have been any less alarming! She was more relaxed, but only marginally so, when her second son set off on his Gap Year adventures. Those years provided a fantastic backdrop to her novel set in Oxford, Paris and Melbourne.
The Perfume Muse is the sequel to Run Away and takes her main character Julie to the beautiful Grasse region of France, the heart of the perfume industry. For her novel, Alex drew on her extensive knowledge of the perfume business as a journalist and writer, and was able to explore the evocative mysteries of perfume and its impact on memory and love.
