Publisher's summary

The curse that made Lord Hugh of Stasiek the most dangerous man in the empire also destroyed his will to live. He now yearns for nothing more than dissolution, to lose himself in strong wine, reckless gambling, and in the arms of countless beautiful women. Yet when the call comes from the one man he cannot disobey - his elder brother, the duke - he puts aside his dreams of death and rides forth to secure the fate of a seemingly insignificant border town.

Joined by a small cadre of uniquely lethal and gorgeous women, Hugh crushes every obstacle before him, only to discover an insidious and malignant force that defies even the power of his blade. A force that, if left unchecked, will consume not only the town and everyone Hugh has come to care for, but sweep down into the duchy itself and bring forth an age of fire and ruin.

Only Hugh's curse - that fey, wretched source of his ungodly might - gives him a chance of preventing this dire fate. But choosing to consciously embrace that power - the same that near drove him to death - could have consequences far beyond anything he could imagine....

Warning and minor spoilers: This is an 18+ audiobook intended for mature listeners. It contains graphic sex, medieval violence, and harem relationships.

YOU COULD CUT THE TENSION WITH A KNIFE !!!!

No Lie this book was great from start to finish, it doesn't leave you on a cliffhanger, character development is really good and you can literally cut the drama and tension with a knife (these aren't my words these are words from my wife who heard some parts of the book said "oh damn" and sat down to keep listening). Sex scenes were very good too, but as with all dirty books there's some stuff in it that you like and there's some stuff in there that you could do without for me there was only one thing in the book I could have done without in the sex scenes and the scenes came and went so fast didn't really bother me (pun not intended) for the most part phenomenal good job Mike Truck.

decent

I like the stories by this author. the narration was great. but characters come out of character often , some are annoying and one is extremely arogant and preachy. all characters think they are psychologists. makes for drawn our dialog.
we all like dialog and character development. be consistent. the story is great. but my brain wanders with the over analyzing dialog.

Another winner

I love me the shadow rogue universe!!
Another great addition and a great new set of characters to fall in with. It still has that amazing universe bending that we got with shadow rogue, but with a new set of mythos and characters to steal your audible credit!

I love this tale.

So this is a tale of a man that has lost the will to live, but at the same time, he can not bring himself to take his own life. Unable to find his own way in life his brother sends him on a quest. While trying to solve this task he finds a reason to fight on.

A good story and even good smut are in this tale.everything that is advertised is here while leaving the reader with a deep world that is yet unexplored. To be delved in to, in the next book.

Spoiler
As a reader, my major complaint is in chapter 16, the main character gets captured as part of the story. As a long term reader of fiction, it is a skippable part of the story or unimportant. I personally have complaints as a person that understands violence please never hit someone in the temple to knock them unconscious as you will most likely kill them.

Award-winning in every way

When I needed to work, I was listening to this book instead. This book held my attention every minute, with the 3 strong, different females, and Hugh, a male learning to be a man, and the aspects of magic and spiritualism in a different realm, and unbeatable world-building. Yes, there is explicit violence when fighting occurred, which wasn't constant or even numerous. And yes, there was explicit hetero sex, but it also wasn't constant. In a 16-hr book there were about 6 sex scenes spread throughout the book. That includes a WWM menage and 2 brief moments of a*s play, if that's a problem for you. The scenes are quite explicit but also sensual. I listen to erotica, so they didn't seem crude to me, just explicit, with explicit language, generally just pu**y, f**k, and co*k and talk of aroused scents and moisture levels. But the line between crude and sensual or erotic is thin to many folk. The scenes aren't brief but in no way, no way are they the focus of the story or gratuitous. It also helps to have such an exceptional narrator keep things sensual and not raunchy. She was superb throughout. Her voices of the 3 main characters--Anna, Zaria, Moirin--wasn't so distinguishable, yet she somehow made it clear, in conjunction with the story, who was speaking.
The only small negative for me was the overuse of "Fortuna wept." And the very large negative was the culturally incompetent & worse act of using of "black" to only indicate evil and horror. It indicates either ignorance or hate, both of which are bad and supports the continuation of oppression, intentionally or not. Impact and not intent is what the wise and caring recognize and then act accordingly.

I am more than surprised

I was expecting another dumb MC and shallow story propped up by a harem and over overly descriptive sex. However what I got was a story that felt real in many was. This wasn't predictable or overrated. It did feel like it wasn't going anywhere but it kept you interested in the prospect of something big around the corner. I look forward to book 2.

The narrator was pretty good. I do feel like distinction between characters is a just a liitle lacking but it was still better than most.

A Future Classic

Another brilliant novel by Mike Truk... It is so well written as it draws one into the book... totally engaging the reader.

Good story

It’s a story with an overpowered hero, but the intrigue of the plot kept me paying attention.
