Publisher's summary

What doesn't make you evil, makes you stronger.

Nevaeh faces the overpowering gravity of her choice to save those she loves while striving for strength to fight her greatest threat - herself.

While she struggles to keep herself - and the unpredictable beast inside her - in check, she has to play the part of a Dark Celata and fulfill every wicked task they command of her, using her supernatural abilities. It's the only chance she has to get George and Gavyn back. However, with each mission she goes on, the line between the woman she used to be and the monster she's becoming grows thinner.

Archard watches the world suffer for his mistakes. In an attempt to right his wrongs - and heal the hole in his heart - he chases Nev, but every lead ends with more questions about who she is, where she comes from, and how to save her - if he can save her at all.

Will Nevaeh survive the soul-severing decision she's made?

Will those who love Nevaeh survive her?

Awesome sequel!

First of all, bravo to the narrator for keeping in character, even though she's not the same person who narrated the first book. That is tough to pull off. I'm really enjoying this series so far, even with all of the angst bits (which I generally avoid) because this is such a cool story. I definitely recommend to paranormal romance readers, especially if you like the darker stories. one last thing: I'm really, really glad book three is coming out soon. The way this one ended? Pure evil genius. Well done, all the way around.

The Battle of Good Vs. Evil Continues

This is the second book in this series and it picks up very nicely where the first book ends. Things get a whole lot darker and deeper in this book and I found that I had to take a brief one day break while listening as it was getting so heavy and I was so immersed in this story that I needed to back away. The writing is so good that you do find yourself completely immersed in this story and can't wait to find out what is going to happen to everybody and find out what Neveah decides. Once again this book has a bit of a cliffhanger (although not as bad as the first one) so you'll want to be sure to pick up the third book as you're nearing the end of the this one so you can jump right in. I'm not usually a paranormal reader/fan but Haven is such a fantastic writer that I really am enjoying this series and am fully vested in it and finding out what the conclusion is! Vanessa does a great job of bringing Nebeah to life, it did take me a little while to warm up to her as I had just finished listening to Falter and that one has a different narrator.

Great follow up to Falter

Severance is the second book in the Faltering Souls Series and begins on the last scene of Falter book one.
I find Nevaeh to be very interesting, she has lots of strength of character even when she is struggling with her inter being she finds the will to do right over wrong and doesn’t falter from her goal.
Lots of history has been revealed, more understanding of the characters and hopefully where this story is leading, however just when we are getting somewhere cliffhanger. I for one will wait for Contrition book three and the answer is Nevaeh a savior of a destroyer.
Vanessa Vasquez is the narrator, I personally did not enjoy her performance as well as the narrator of the first book, but that is solely my opinion.

Great Read

Severance (Faltering Souls #2) was a great read by Haven Cage. Navaeh faces the gravity of her choice to save those she loves. She struggles to keep herself and the beast inside her in check. Archard watches as the world suffers for his mistakes. He chases Nev to heal the hole in his heart and right his wrongs. But all he gets is more questions everywhere he turns. I enjoyed reading this book and can't wait to read more by the author.

Dark and Fantastic Continuation of the Series

Severance is book 2 of the Faltering Souls series. This book is told in mostly alternating first person dual POV for the main characters Nevaeh and Archard. This book is not a standalone and must be read in series order, following book 1, Falter.

Severance started with the scene that Falter ended on. Just as that book ended on a cliffhanger, this one does too. And what a cliffhanger it is!! I can't wait to find out what happens next.

If you have not already read/listened to Falter, you shouldn't continue reading this review as there will be some spoilers for book 1.

Book 1 ended with Nevaeh renouncing god and accepting the devil as she knew that was her only way to go to hell to attempt to free George's soul. Plus, Gavyn sacrificed himself to become dark to follow Layla to hell because he was trying to save Nevaeh, so Nev now has to try to save him too.

There is a whole lot of dark in this book and if you are sensitive to things such as torture and rape, you may want to consider if this book will be too much for you to handle. Luckily for me, as long as animals aren't harmed, I don't have many limits. I can handle the pitch black kind of dark so this was all good for me.

There was still a good amount of mystery and suspense with this book and even though I figured out one big mystery about 67% in, I was still hooked. I enjoyed trying to follow the bread crumbs and piece clues together. Since a lot of this book dealt with Nevaeh's transformations, her gifts/curses, and her inner struggles, we didn't get much in the love and romance department but this book isn't meant to be a romance so nothing lost there. I just happen to be someone who likes a little romance sprinkled into most of my stories so I am always keeping an eye out.

We were introduced to a few new characters and the story has continued to evolve. I still loved the same characters in this book so my loyalties haven't changed from one book to the next. We didn't get to see much of George in this book but I loved the scenes that he was in. I don't want to give anything away so I won't talk about any of the other characters or what happened with them. You must find out for yourself. It will be quite the exciting ride though. This book is enthralling.

Book 1 is still my favorite from this series. The writing felt a bit different this time around but that is to be expected given the story became much darker. I can't wait to see how it goes in book 3, Contrition.

I stole this paragraph from my review of Falter because I feel like it needs to be restated here as well. Even though this book has a lot of discussion about angels, demons, faith, humanity, spirituality, heaven, hell, god, and redemption, it was done in a way that didn't feel like bible thumping. I am not religious and can get turned off by really preachy books, but this did not feel like preaching, just a fantasy story. I think atheists would be able to still enjoy this book just fine as the work of fiction that it is.

As for the narration, just a heads up, this is a different narrator from book 1. The narrator in book 1 knocked my socks off. She was incredible. I was a bit disappointed to find out that a different narrator was used for Severance. This narrator was good. She spoke clearly and was easy to understand. She had good pacing. My only issue with the narrator was the lack of distinct voices. It was odd that the most distinct voice that was easy to identify at all times was the side character, Layla. Another side character, Arkin, also got a distinct voice. Unfortunately, there were several times where I had to start a chapter over to make sure I knew whose POV it was. Considering it was either Nevaeh, a female character, or Archard, a male character, it kind of bummed me out that I couldn't tell right away. If you listen to the whole thing straight through or are someone who listens to the end of a chapter before pausing the book so you can pick back up with the next chapter, this likely will not be such a problem for you. I was just listening anytime I could, be it 10 minutes at a time or an hour, so I found that to be a challenge.

I definitely recommend this book and this series. It is so creative and exciting. 4.5 Stars.

That ending!!!

Well, that certainly ended with a bang!

Severance is book 2 in the Faltering Souls Trilogy from Haven Cage. Book 2 picks up precisely where the first one ended. You will need to read book 1 first.

Nev is literally in Hell in book 2. Her unorthodox decisions have placed her into the hands of the Devil but she sees it as the only way to save her family and friends - George and Gavyn. And Archard is coming unglued in his plight to save Neh.

Severance is much darker and more twisted than Falter. I assure you it is not for the faint of heart. Secrets from Nev's past come to light as she comes face to face with her parents. Once again Nev takes the fate of everyone into her own hands and makes decisions that will jeopardize Heaven and Hell.

The ending is one heck of a cliffhanger. Thankfully the trilogy is complete and I can move on to book 3.

Vanessa Vasquez as the narrator was perfect for the story. She conveyed Nev's feelings through the words. I could feel the suffering.

A great 2nd book

This one had abit more character development than the first one that was more focused on Nevaeh. It continued on with her journey and gave insight to other characters that help and hinder her. Can’t wait for the 3rd book to finish out the series.
