I never meant to build a life among the dead—but it was the one thing that made sense. The work was quiet, methodical. It gave me space to breathe. To keep things simple.
Then Patrick Dalton walked into my life.
Warm, charming, gentle, devastatingly perfect.
He made my chest ache, even when I tried to keep him at arm's length. And he made me want more.
And for a while, I let myself believe I could have that.
But life has a way of shifting itself.
And the things we think we've buried don't always stay gone.

The storyline

Got this during a shopping spree, thinking this was dark romance. Then, looking at the summary anew, I worried this was full-on horror, which is not my thing. Turns out, this was a mix of suspense, romance, parental angst, and yes, horror, but all at levels I could accept.
“It’s not perfect; it’s not deep.”
It was predictable (delivering enough crumbs for me to figure things out, as good mysteries do), then reminiscent of Misery, then went in a direction I didn’t see coming at all. There was more sex and less gore than I expected. It also ran several hours too long and I’m not sure I bought Levana’s choices in the second half. However, I will pursue more from this author because this delivered a unique story and some interesting questions.
⛔️ Consider that trauma involving babies is a major factor, with great detail about how morgues prepare their bodies..
More suspense than horror
