Publisher's summary

Church congregations all across the United States are searching for the magic bullet, the secret to attracting people, growing their membership and their cultural relevance. They are looking for the right program, or the right environment, or the right features to help bring people back into the pews. With all of this searching for the right answer, they're missing what's right in front of them: Word and Sacrament.

The ancient church saw martyrdom as an honor. Today, we cower in corners, bickering over the color of the carpet. The ancient church conquered the world by dying at its hands. Today, we are crushed in an overwhelming retreat of trying to fit in. The first Christians were not searching for anything. They were convinced that they had found the answer. They had the powerful message of a Savior. They were fearless. Could the magic bullet, the secret, be that simple?

In Without Flesh, author Jonathan Fisk encourages listeners to focus on the unchanging Word of God, instead of searching for a new tool to bring people to church, and teaches them how to be fearless and confident in proclaiming the Word of God.

Nice book on the Lord’s Supper

As an LCMS pastor, I enjoyed his book as a whole. He was an engaging writer who certainly made you think. I wholeheartedly agree with his theology and points, but found some of his argumentation a little strange, especially his chapter on hearing, and his one on John.

Deep beauty

An astoundingly beautiful look at the deep mystery of the Sacrament of the Altar. Excellent foundation set to aid understanding in the vernacular. This book is well written, subject matter is sublime, and the narrarator had a pleasant voice. Great listening for those who like to think.

Good food for thought

Appreciated his focus on the Sacrament. Some odd arguments in places but worth reading.

Pure Truth

This is probably the best book Fisk has ever written. It is organized, poetic, witty, and just straight up Fisk. There are actually times when I can hear him speaking the words in my mind. It's probably good that he's not narrating because there are sections where he would definitely be shouting.

Alongside Sasse's "This is My Body", Without Flesh is the best book on the Lord's Supper that I've ever read.
