Publisher's summary

“Help,” a tiny voice cried out into the darkness. Little Betsy trembled, praying someone would hear her, save her. “Please,” she whimpered. “I’m scared.”

On the hottest day of the year, as a heatwave takes hold of the Appalachian Mountains, a five-year-old girl goes missing. Just as the sun is setting, a family vacation becomes a worst nightmare—Betsy, with her green eyes, ponytail, and rainbow T-shirt—disappears in the woods by Widow Lake. Detective Ellie Reeves is straight on the scene, promising Betsy’s heartbroken parents that she will stop at nothing to find their precious daughter.

Hours later, Ellie is called back to the lake. One of her team have discovered some remains near where Betsy disappeared. The bones belong to a local girl, Amy Dean, who vanished 10 years ago to the day, along with her two-year-old baby girl Paisley. But why was Paisley never reported missing? And could she still be alive?

Ellie is suddenly up against the toughest case of her career. Her instincts tell her that the two cases are somehow connected, and she works day and night to uncover the link. When she comes across some little graves beside the water’s edge, she knows she needs to stop the evil lurking around this tranquil lake.

When Ellie discovers a notebook scrawled with the handwriting of a little girl, it could be the breakthrough she needs. Can she unravel a decades-old mystery, and stop the monster claiming innocent lives?

This totally addictive and jaw-dropping crime thriller will have your heart racing! Perfect for fans of Melinda Leigh, Lisa Regan, and Kendra Elliot.

Had to fast forward to finish

My eyes hurt from eye rolling. Improbable, inconsistent and not a very good story. I do not understand the good reviews.

Performance without emotions

There were some inflections in the voice of the narrator, but most the time it didn’t match the emotions going on and made it confusing. The narrator made the book do you enjoy.

Not impressed

Hard to tell whether it’s a really bad story, or a melodramatic narrator. Not sure why I even listened to the end. Full of clichés, and unnecessarily descriptors.

On and on and on!

Was very hard to keep up with who all the characters were! Narration was painful to listen to. Sometimes you hate for a book to end - not this one, I couldn’t finish this soon enough! Maybe better to read the book so you could keep up with all the characters

Horrible Narrator

The story was ok, a little confusing at times, moments skipped others dragged on but it was good. A bit predictable at the end with Lola, Ellie and Cord.

The narrator was horrible, her voice was irritating.

Narration was weak

Narrator sounded like she was reading a list of uninteresting phrases rather than a story.

An I tense Murder Suspense

The suspense and twists kept the book interesting.
The seed of romance was disappointing.
The Agent and Detrctive team was a yart of the books I enjoyed with their romance growing.
Cord and Lola should have and hopefully will end as a happy story.
Disappointed by the character turn out.

Narrator "reading"

I really wanted to like this book. I did listen to it all. I found the story interesting, but it just didn't hit the mark. The narrator just didn't do it for me.

Awful

I did finish this audiobook, but I didn’t enjoy it. The narration was not appealing. The storyline was very convoluted and unbelievable and there were way too many different characters and storylines going on to keep track, particularly with the somewhat monotonous performance. This is one of the worst audiobooks I have ever listened to.

Much too many characters, predictable plot.

I don’t like to disparage anyone’s hard work. This book was okay at best. Narrator was blasé.
