Publisher's summary

In the dark pine forest surrounding the quiet town of Rattlesnake Creek, the body of a young girl lies on the ground. Her angelic blonde hair spills over her shoulders and her unblinking eyes stare up toward the sky....

It was Beth Katz’s serial killer father who made her like she is: a successful FBI agent and an unstoppable vigilante dedicated to hunting down murderers who have evaded capture. Beth will push herself to the limits to deliver justice. Even if it means killing those who deserve to die.

When the body of missing schoolgirl Brooklyn Daniels is discovered in a secluded patch of woodland on the outskirts of town, Beth and her partner, Dax Styles, race to the scene. Brooklyn and her best friend left home to pick wildflowers a week ago and vanished without trace.

Taking in Brooklyn’s body carefully laid on a blanket and the dress neatly folded next to her, Beth suddenly freezes. She’s seen this before: in the files of a cold case. The perpetrator takes two girls—one vanishes, the other is killed and left with her clothes beside her. Now Beth knows she has a twisted serial killer on her hands, she’ll stop at nothing to catch him. Even if it means going against Dax’s orders....

Desperate to find the other missing girl, Beth’s heart pounds as she puts herself up as bait and walks into the secluded forest, knowing evil is lurking nearby. With Dax watching her every move, Beth prays the gamble pays off. Can she outsmart the murderer, or did she just walk into a trap? And when Beth finally comes face-to-face with the killer, will she hand him over or serve justice of her very own?

From USA Today and Wall Street Journal best-selling author D.K. Hood, this thrilling new series is perfect for fans of Robert Dugoni, Lisa Regan, and Melinda Leigh.

New, refreshing concept!

An FBI agent who dispenses vigilante justice…this is Agent Beth Katz. Beth is the product of a serial killer…and she has the same tendencies except she goes after pedophiles. After a bust in which the perp was caught in the act and killed, Beth is sent to the mountains. There she teams up w another lone wolf agent, Styles. Together, the pair must hunt and catch a killer. We meet a couple familiar faces from Black Rock Falls…and a visit to Aunt Betty’s Cafe. Familiar feel but slightly different to Jenna Alton and team. Great start to this new series.

Glad to meet a new FBI Agent

Great characters and great plot development. Beth is a nonconformist who carries her job description to a next level. Loved the narrator, stories come to life quickly when the narrator is this good. Moving right along to book 2.

Reader for this series is so much better than the Alton and Kane series. I can barely listen to the other books.

Excellent Start to a New Series!!!!

This new series by D. K. Hood is really very good. I was quite surprised to say the least! I do listen to her other series (Detectives Kane and Alton) which has turned into a Serial Killer Central series. I like the series but it is not exactly believable, it’s entertaining.
This new series is one to take a listen to if you like the mystery/thriller genre. The protagonist is Beth Katz. Her own father is a serial killer. She decides to become an FBI agent with a twist. She too is a serial killer known to law enforcement as the tarot killer. The difference between her and her father is that she only kills killers. Kind of along the same path as Dexter (if you’re familiar with that character). The difference is she doesn’t take any trophies.
As with her other series, some suspense of belief is required. Compared to real life things get done pretty quickly. But the story is good and the motives are as well.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book and since both books 1 & 2 were released at the same time I am now listening to the second book in the series.
Lauryn Allman does a great job narrating.
This book has my VERY HIGHEST RECOMMENDATION.

Juvenile writing with a very adult subject. Kind of strange

This book confused my brain a bit. I read it because I love the narrator and it was in the genre of books I like. The writing was oddly juvenile seeming and some instances were cheesy. I also did not realize it was about crimes against children. Great narrator. A bit of an odd book. Wish I’d known the extent of the subject matter. 🤷‍♀️
