Publisher's summary

Hillsborough, North Carolina is a town with a dark history, one that was hidden until investigative journalist Laura Chambers pulled it into the light.

Nearly a year has passed since her deadly encounter with a serial killer’s twisted progeny, a brutal confrontation that left her physically and emotionally scarred. She’s ready to put the past behind her, but the past has other plans. A woman runs onto the interstate, directly into the path of a truck, and the gruesome accident leaves behind a mangled corpse. Her very last phone call was to Laura, but the victim was barefoot, in a state of undress, and her face is disfigured beyond recognition. Identification seems impossible, and the only thing in her possession is an old photograph depicting Laura, her father—and standing next to them—her imaginary friend from childhood. What else is mistaken about her memories?

Laura’s father passed away when she was eight, and she thought she understood why he vanished from her life the year before he died, but the photograph casts doubt on everything she thought she knew. Soon Laura is digging into the history of the deceased, and her own family, determined to discover what lies beneath...

Big secrets in a small town

This can be read as a stand alone book, but is better to read the first in the series before this one. That gives you more back story on some of the characters in this book. Once again Laura is thrown into a battle to solve a mysterious death of a young woman. The woman was tragically killed in a truck versus pedestrian accident. Moments before she was killed, she called Laura's phone 4 times. The last call was a voicemail with no voices, just some breathing and background noise. Naturally the town's police department is convinced Laura knew the victim and wants to know why she called Laura. While investigating the death and identity of "Jane Doe", Laura stumbles into big secrets and coverups by her family, neighbor and more. The people behind the secrets don't want the information known and will stop at nothing, including murder, to keep those secrets buried. Will Laura survive and find out what really happened all those years ago? How will it effect her identity and memories from years gone past? Good story with lots of twists.

Captivating story from the beginning

First time, I have listen to a story from this author, and what a writer print. So many twists and turns throughout the story it’s hard to stop listening because you want to know what happens next. And throughout the story is not able to figure out what would happen next. Performance was exceptional as well.

The Mother....

The mother in this book is vile! She gives Joan Crawford a run for her money. I found myself cringing and have real empathy for Laura Chambers. Great book!

Even better than the first book!

Even better than the first book and I really liked the first book. This one had my attention from the very first chapter and kept it throughout. A great mystery! I don’t take time to review books but this one really had me lured in and deserves a standing ovation. Well written!!!

Excellent!

Just when you think it’s the run of the mill mystery that you’ve already figured out….definitely did not end as I had thought.
