Publisher's summary

A small-town attorney takes on prejudice and corruption in this powerful legal thriller.

Small-town lawyer Bocephus Haynes comes home late one night to find District Attorney General Helen Lewis waiting for him. Her ex-husband has just been killed. She’s about to be arrested for his murder. And she wants Bo to represent her.

There’s a lot working against them. Just before his death, Helen’s ex-husband threatened to reveal a dark secret from her past. Bo has been in a tailspin since his wife’s death. What’s more, his whole life has been defined by a crime committed against his family, and he continues to face prejudice as the only African American litigator in Pulaski, Tennessee.

Bo’s back is against the wall, and Helen resigns herself to a dismal fate - but a stunning discovery throws everything into chaos. There’s a chance for justice, but to achieve it, the cost might be too much for Bo to bear.

Very well plotted, surprising plausible wrap-up

I wasn't sure I'd stick with the story as the opening characters were unsavory and I didn't want these BFFs for the duration. I'm glad I did. They reappeared in interesting ways, with two other central characters, and manageable handful of other well crafted town folk. A skillful writer and storyteller.

Great story with twists

Great story with interesting characters, each with flaws. Lots of believable twists and says up well for follow-up stories.

Unnecessarily Elaborate - Flabby Writing

This story is so confusing. Just five minutes in I needed a scorecard to keep track of the already superfluous and unnecessary characters. Vonnegut said he didn't provide food or transportation for his characters because readers were perfectly willing to accept someone eating breakfast and driving to work. But this writer wants us to know which salad dressing his character uses on his cherry tomatoes and what color his shoelaces are. Really? As someone else wrote "Enough already!" In addition, the protagonist is the nastiest and most brusque character since Attila. She doesn't have a nice word for anyone in her orbit. In short, she's a real bitch. There's nothing likable about her. I don't get it. There are way, way too many characters and subplots, all of which are distracting from what could have been a pretty good story. Mr. Bailey, please take it down a notch unless you just like to hear yourself type. This is a four-hour story delivered in eight and a half. I'm already in this far but each new chapter is a decision to invest more time or just cut my losses. Caveat Emptor.

5 for 5

Bailey has to be proud of this book, it was his best and that speaks volumes because his first four books were all outstanding! The ending chapters finished with thrilling twists and turns then set the hook for the next book. I’m ready to pre-order now!
Eric Dove’s performance was perfect as always.
Thanks for the great books!

Pretty good story.

This story was pretty good, and the narrator did a nice job with the various accents of the different characters. Where this audiobook fell short for me was the narrator’s monotone, automaton reading while he was not in any particular character. It was very robotic and uncomfortable to listen to, for me anyway. Not a great book but worth a credit.

It is the end that gets you

This is my first book from this author and I am liking him. I love Legal dramas and legal thrillers. This book had, by far, the most unpredictable ending of all the Legal books I have read this year and last. I never saw it coming. I can’t wait for the next series.
