Publisher's summary

Traumatic life experiences can be devastating, and they inevitably shape who you are. Such events can also become a powerful force that awakens you to an undercurrent of your own aliveness. Trauma recovery involves learning to trust in your capacity for new growth. In order to grow, we must make use of our suffering in order to find our happiness.

Within this audiobook, you will find an invitation to see yourself as the hero or heroine of your own life journey. A hero's journey involves walking into the darkness on a quest for wholeness. This interactive format calls for journaling and self-reflection, with practices that guide you beyond the pain of your past and help you discover a sense of meaning and purpose in your life. Successful navigation of a hero's journey provides opportunities to discover that you are more powerful than you had previously realized.

Written by Dr. Arielle Schwartz, best-selling author of The Complex PTSD Workbook, this healing guide provides a step-by-step approach to trauma recovery that integrates:

  • Mindfulness and yoga
  • Somatic psychology
  • EMDR therapy
  • Parts work therapy

Somewhat Scattered, Narration Almost Unbearable

It was very difficult to appreciate the content in the book because the narration was extremely bad. I have read hundreds of audiobooks, and of all of them this one may be the worst. I hope the author would consider getting the book we re-recorded.

I think in general the content is okay, though scattered, it feels like she just took a bunch of fragments from various trauma techniques and copied and pasted them into one stream-of-consciousness book.

Maybe a little more focus and not trying to include so much, or a more clearly structured and less meandering would have been better. (Admittedly I couldn’t get through the book, just the first few chapters. I have read about 20 books on trauma and didn’t find anything new, it felt more like it was about trauma processing than about post traumatic growth.)

Incomplete Narration

My issue with this audible is not with the author or the narrator. Content and narration are good. I like the narrator. Her pace is good and she pauses at appropriate times for reflective exercises. My issue, which is pretty big, is that the audible copy of the book is incomplete. As I listened to the narration and I read the physical copy of the book to take notes, I realized that the narration doesn’t complete chapter one before moving on to chapter two. I thought that this might be an abridged copy and that was why parts of the book are left out of the narration, but the PDF copy that accompanies this edition is the same content as the physical copy I can hold in my hands. So I’m left wondering if this was edited incorrectly or the publisher intentionally left whole sections out? I do feel like this was a mistake purchasing because the audible version is incomplete.
