Publisher's summary

“Dark, twisty and full of characters you’ll love to hate, The Nanny is the perfect read for a chilly winter’s night.” (Ruth Ware, New York Times best-selling author)

The Nanny kept me in white-knuckled suspense until the very last page. Gilly Macmillan’s breakout thriller is a dark and twisted version of Downton Abbey gone very, very wrong.” (Tess Gerritsen, New York Times best-selling author)

The New York Times best-selling author of What She Knew conjures a dark and unpredictable tale of family secrets that explores the lengths people will go to hurt one another.

When her beloved nanny, Hannah, left without a trace in the summer of 1988, seven-year-old Jocelyn Holt was devastated. Haunted by the loss, Jo grew up bitter and distant, and eventually left her parents and Lake Hall, their faded aristocratic home, behind.

Thirty years later, Jo returns to the house and is forced to confront her troubled relationship with her mother. But when human remains are accidentally uncovered in a lake on the estate, Jo begins to question everything she thought she knew.

Then an unexpected visitor knocks on the door and Jo’s world is destroyed again. Desperate to piece together the gaping holes in her memory, Jo must uncover who her nanny really was, why she left, and if she can trust her own mother....

In this compulsively listenable tale of secrets, lies, and deception, Gilly Macmillan explores the darkest impulses and desires of the human heart. Diabolically clever, The Nanny reminds us that sometimes the truth hurts so much you’d rather hear the lie.

another great one from G.M.

Great plot :) Clare Corbett still can't do American accents but makes up for it with the other characters.

Fun story

This was a fun book listen too. The narrators were excellent! The voices were perfect for all characters. Sometimes multi narrator projects don’t work so well but this was good. I started this book a few times but I do that with quite a few books. Sometimes it’s just not the right time to read particular genres for one reason or another. But when it clicked it was easy to get into and know the players. A few red herrings in the story I caught which were good. Everything wasn’t totally worked out all the main things were and I wasn’t left hanging which was great. Will
look for more works by this author.

Love my British books! Nanny from hell!

“The Nanny,” OMG! Don’t miss this one. First off, I have to compliment the narrators as they bring this book to life so well I can see everything in my mind’s eye. A years-ago missing person’s case comes to the surface with humor and extraordinary, quirky and dangerous characters, along with the police detectives poking around after a disturbing discovery. Just when I thought I had it all figured out, hell, was I wrong! I’m looking forward to more suspenseful thrillers by now one of my favorite authors, Gilly Macmillan. This is one of the best British mysteries in my Audible library. Thank you to all involved for bringing us into this romp through the British countryside as family members’ true feelings come to light. Very highly recommended with 🍒 🍒 🍒 on top! Worth a credit more than I can stress, though I was lucky to get this one for a few dollars. Epic I say, EPIC!

Love Virginia!!

My first time reading Gilly Macmillan, a little slow in the beginning. I found Jo exceptionally unintelligent. she Couldn’t seem to figure anything out and unrealistically siding with the nanny over her own daughter. Lord and lady Holt were the most interesting characters. They live an interesting and complicated life. I absolutely love Virginia and her performance. The nanny, is simply an psychopath. I enjoyed the book! Will explore more work of Gilly Macmillan.

DNF. Over-wrought and over-written.

Needed a gifted editor to prune strategically. The characters were flat and unlikeable. Story was gothic without the fog and tension.

Very enthralling!

Although it became predictable towards the end, it kept me intrigued, nonetheless. I enjoyed it. Will be reading more from this author.

Pretty good

The voice of the daughter and little girl are a little weird but other than that it was pretty good

Good summer choice

Just enough mystery wrapped in a clever story. I think it would have been better if the story stuck to the mother-daughter relationship or lack there of, and left out the police point of view.

Must listen

I loved this. It seemed a little predictable at first but really wasn’t. I would’ve liked to see Hannah’s motives explored a little more but it’s not hard to imagine it from the context given! I liked the way it switched between perspectives and went from first to third person depending on whose perspective you listen to. Very captivating. I finished it in two days.
