Publisher's summary

This program includes a preface read by David Remnick, the editor of The New Yorker, and an epilogue read by Congressman Jamie Raskin.

Celadon Books and The New Yorker present the report by the Select Committee to Investigate the Jan 6 Attack on the United States Capitol.

On January 6, 2021, insurgents stormed the U.S. Capitol, an act of domestic terror without parallel in American history, designed to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power. In a resolution six months later, the House of Representatives called it "one of the darkest days of our democracy," and established a special committee to investigate how and why the attack happened.

Celadon Books, in collaboration with The New Yorker, presents the committee's final report, the definitive account of January 6th and what led up to it, based on more than a year of investigation by nine members of Congress and committee staff with a preface by David Remnick, the editor of The New Yorker and a winner of the Pulitzer Prize.

Excellent read

Narrators were excellent
Easy to follow
Very informative, even if you watched all the hearings and read news articles. The report has additional information and is well organized and written for the citizen to read and understand.

One suggestion

Great work by the committee and the folks involved in the production. One suggestion might be, in recognition of the historical significance of this document, to sponsor this as a free audiobook. I’m certain that’s not a popular suggestion at audible but I think it’s critical that as many barriers to accessing this report be eliminated as possible because I think it’s critical to the future of our democracy as many Americans as possible get this information. Likewise, I offer the same criticism for the Select Committee, which should publish an audio copy of the report so visually impaired Americans have access for the same reasons outlined.

Excellent work here by all!!

Truth matters. Lies are evil.

I think the great crisis of our time is the idea of alternate truth. This may work with perspective and experiences, but not with facts and evidence. I am so grateful to the January 6 committee, and pray that every American will read it. That’s not too much to ask for the democracy. We are blessed with.

Valuable listen but flaws are hard to ignore

I will preface by saying I am an independent and no fan of Donald Trump. I listened to this entire audiobook to try to inform myself about how Jan 6 happened and what can be done to avoid it in the future. With that in mind, I did find that there is good information and I have a much better picture of how Jan 6 happened. And, to some degree, insights into how to address some of the issues.

However, I was incredibly frustrated by two things that I noted throughout the report that were hard to ignore: 1 - there was A LOT of repetition of some of the facts or information that was obtained. I can imagine this might have been easier to manage if I had been reading vs listening but I found myself wishing they would have streamlined so much more. Instead I felt that some of this was overhyping moments that didn’t need to be (as they were pretty eye opening the first time). 2 - my bigger complaint, however, was the bias that came out in many ways. Not so much when sharing testimony (although it was there subtly in word choices) but more in the way everything was positioned. Honestly, the information spoke for itself, adding to it just made it feel like the authors were letting their own bias get in the way. This was particularly problematic with some of the appendices (the one about fundraising really ticked me off - I don’t recall this being a stated purpose of the committee and it felt very political). And finally, the Epilogue was a terrible ending. There was so much partisan language that it would have been easy to dismiss some very interesting ideas and points that were buried in there.

I am disappointed because I believe that the powerful story and information here was tainted by these issues and I worry this will not help convince anyone who did not already believe most of this and it might even turn off some people who could have been convinced.

Again - I am glad I listened but I had hoped for better.
