Publisher's summary

A portrait painting is stolen from a London home. Shortly afterwards, the owner, Nat, calls on genealogist Jefferson Tayte for his help. She believes the subject of the painting, a young girl called Jess, is a past relative and wants to learn more about her. The problem is that Nat's research has hit a brick wall - Jess appears to have vanished from the slums of Victorian London soon after the portrait was painted.

When Tayte learns that the theft is connected with a recent murder, he's right to be wary, but solving crimes through genealogical research is what he does best. He quickly becomes intrigued by the girl in the painting and agrees to help. What became of her? Who stole the painting, and why would they kill for it all these years later?

As Tayte and Nat go in search of the answers, can they solve the mystery and bring the murderer to justice? Or will they become the killer's next victims?

Once Started, Couldn't STOP!!!!

What a beautiful story of the genealogical hunt for a family member!!! JT is a great teacher. I think he will do well in his new pursuit as long as he has a "field trip" occasionally!!!

Very Enjoyable Series

I hope this not the last of the Jefferson Tayte books. I would certainly like to read or listen to more of the mysteries. Also, it would be more enjoyable to include his brother Rudi and is wife Jean as more central characters.

More like the idea for a series book. Incomplete.

The story had potential, as did several unexplored plot lines within it, but there was so little development. Most distracting, was the complete and inexplicable absence of one of the series' major characters. (I wasted time searching for what I assumed I must have missed and, when I discovered nothing, I kept waiting for Tayte to mention some tragedy. Nope.) We are genealogists for goodness' sake! We'll spend years looking for family members that disappear from the records after a blip on a census! - A general suggestion for Mr. Robinson would be to have both an American and British friend review the final drafts to be sure Tayte's terminology more consistently American, and vice versa. I have enjoyed the other titles in this series very much, but I am glad I purchased this one with the recent 'coupon' Audible sent, rather than my precious credit.
