Publisher's summary

A story of honesty and humor for anyone who has ever lived and loved from New York Times best-selling author LaVyrle Spencer.

Agatha was the picture of primness and propriety, but her green eyes could blaze with anger - or sparkle with humor.

Scott was the picture of lazy charm and happy indifference to what others thought was right and wrong.

They were enemies, then friends. Then the sweet innocence of a child opened their eyes and their hearts - and they were reborn in each other's arms by the soft, wondrous gift of love.

Gamble

Wonderful tenderness and promise found in relationships. Narrated exquisitely. Wonderful works can be easily ruined when poorly narrated. However, when enhanced by masterful narration are made completely perfect !

Amazingly romantic—one of my favorites yet!

Can’t believe how this story held my interest…all 17 hours of it…leaving me wanting more! What a talent…what a gem, what an amazing writer, so perfect! These characters will live with me for eternity, they’re so real. How I love them and how I will miss them. Wish I could listen and learn more about them. The best yet from Ms. LaVyrle Spencer…and brilliantly performed too by Emily Sutton-Smith. Absolutely adore and recommend this beautiful love story, it doesn’t disappoint and the ending will leave you a little breathless!

One of my favorite stories of all time

I read the book when it first came and have read it a number of times over the years. It was disappointing to discover that Audibles only had an abridged version.

I was thrilled to discover it is finally out in full-length version.

A great story and a joy to listen to.

A superb and beautiful story!

A huge fan of this author. Her stories are rich in description, depths, and emotions. Incredibly satisfying with characters that will stay with you… The narrator is exceptional as well.

Lovely story

Loved the story line and how things unfolded. I cried at parts. Loved the love shared in other parts.

Another good story

I stumbled across this Author in the plus category so I didn’t have to use a credit to listen to her books! This book was a bit long, but it was still a good listen! I also listen to Years, The Endearment, That Camden Summer and all of her books are worth a credit!

Emily Sutton Smith is a great narrator.

Emily Sutton Smith is a great narrator. She reads very well. Good with voices. Good with accents. I have read all of Lavyrle Spencer's books over the years. I had forgotten how annoying this particular story is.
This is a story written in a time period when men and women got married at the drop of a hat. You met someone, you thought looked nice, you married them.
I absolutely despise those stories where the man and woman have absolutely NO reason why they cannot form an attachment. They're single, they're free to marry. But for some reason, known only to themselves and usually not even to themselves, they just can't.
They know they love each other. But it's impossible for them to be together - for no reason at all.
It's extremely frustrating to read that type of story, knowing that the time period that they lived in, it would have been a much simpler decision.
Instead he would rather leave her alone for the rest of her life to fend for herself and take his other 'family'/friends to his home, including the little boy that she also loves and leave her alone, rather than propose to her. It's infuriating. DEFINITELY not my favorite Lavyrle Spencer book.
But Emily Sutton Smith is a good reader. That's the best I can say about this story.

Great book

A good little story sit around 1890. A story about the struggles during this time. A good little love story with a happy ending.
