Publisher's summary

Deadwood, late 1876. A rowdy and reckless undertaker’s delight. What better place for a killer to blend in?

Enter undertaker Clementine Johanssen, tall and deadly with a hot temper and short fuse, hired to clean up Deadwood’s dead...and the “other” problem. She’s hell-bent on poking, sticking, or stabbing anyone who steps out of line.

But when a couple Santa Fe sidewinders ride into town searching for their missing uncle, they land neck deep in lethal gunplay, nasty cutthroats, and endless stinkin’ snow. Their search leads them to throw in with Clementine to hunt for a common enemy.

What they find chills them all to the bone and sends them on an adventure they’ll never forget.

From the best-selling, multiple award-winning, humorous Deadwood Mystery series comes a new herd of tales set in the same Deadwood stomping grounds, only back in the days when the Old West town was young.

Good Ballance

Some fantasy stories tiss so much new terminology at you it's hard to follow. Others can beat you over the head with so much exposition it takes away from emersion. This has just the right amount of stuff I didn't know going in to be a bit mysterious while backing it up with just enough exposition and good context I could go with the flow. There is an included glossary at the end...so I'll give you three guesses as to whom will be learning new German profanity later. Because I have enough German relative to know how important an expansive selection of expletives is at a family gathering...and this book has some new condemnations to play with.

Western?

This book is definitely not your traditional Western. If you were looking for a traditional western, this is not it if you’re looking for more of a whore type thriller, then you’ll love it.

undertaker 1

Another great book series by Ann Charles. A little supernatural and the Old West.

The Golden Echo Mine!

Clementine Johansson, a fair-sized, husky gal. As Deadwood’s Coronor, Clementine amassed more than enough practice to become quite the CSI: Chief Medical Examiner. The mystery is this other work for which she had been contracted. We switch to The Santa Fe Sidewinders; Jack “Rabbit” and Boon, lifelong friends from the Santa Fe Trail. Inseparable, these two were on a mission to find their Uncle Morton, whom they were to meet in Cheyanne. Unexpectantly, they came across Clementine. Witnessing one of Clementine’s rare displays of anger, Rabbit immediately fell in love. Clementine’s cross to bear was that she loved all her friends that became victims for her to attend to. Her relationship with Hildegard is quite interesting as well. There’s talk of Deadwood being haunted, as this land is said to be sacred to the Dakota Sioux. There’s also a legend of a white grizzly in the surrounding forest. Considering all they had learned about the town, they needed to find Uncle Mort. Following leads from town, they headed towards the town of Leeds. Here they found more than they bargained for. Trouble was brewing in the Black Hills, the sort that made for dark legends of death and destruction. Rabbit finally saw Uncle Mort going into a mine entrance. Here they found more than they ever imagined. But it’s not over yet. And who, or what is Clementine Johansson?

Fun and Quirky

This is an interesting blend of "paranormal thriller" and old Western. I liked the characters, and it was an easy enough story to follow along. My only complaint is that you don't really get full resolution in this book - it continues on in the next book.

slow start

I would say it didn't get interesting until chapter 8. but it was a free book so I continued and hoped it would a strong female.
