Publisher's summary

An assassin with no rival meets a magic he cannot defeat. The Chain Breaker Series begins.

Trained to kill from a young age, Gavin Lorren finally escaped that life. No more killing innocents. No more working alone.

Holed up in a quiet city that has outlawed magic, Gavin finds himself drawn into dangers unlike any he’s ever faced before. Each job tests him more than the last, and each tied to the kind of magic he’d hoped to avoid.

It will take an assassin without equal to survive.

It will take the Chain Breaker.

Immature and simplistic

The writing was not great. The story line was vaguely interesting but at times it sounded like teenagers in a basement playing Dungeons and Dragons. Inconsistencies abound. Character dialog was terrible.

Not bad, decent story line.

I liked the idea behind the story. At times, it was tough as the mc kept making threats to persuade people but never followed up. There needs to be something behind the threats, or they won't work.

Slow with little action.

The main character is supposed to be a formidable warrior but the fight scenes were very few, weakly written and boring. Poor use of a character.

Too much repetition

Using the same few phrases over and over and over made it difficult to listen.

Good bit slow.

It's a great book but seems a bit drawn-out at time. And on book three chapter 11 gets skipped and plays chapters 12 twice.

Twisted

For the author I hope you see this. You use twisted too often in your writing. You may not realize it but every motion or action done has twisted used to describe a scene. It worse in elemental academy series because every time he uses magic he twists it. Which I don’t think I ever heard someone using twist to describe that. Use other descriptive words. I knew this book was written by the same author only by that word alone.

I enjoyed it

I agree with others about the constant doubt. Also, they could’ve described more about their source of magic like some sort of history, or something along the lines. Otherwise it was a good listen.

the worst assassin

the narrator is no RC Bray, but hes far from boring.
the author needs to learn the rule of "show, dont tell". we're constantly told how great the main character is supposed to be. yet he is frequently bested. in 3 books i think the thief has more kills. lastly, if you write an interrogation, use it to drive the plot forward. instead it felt more like hitting a bird on a bicycle, sure you still carry forward but not steady or swift.

a great value for an intriguing story

when I saw the title, I was very intrigued and this didn't disappoint. we really get a good sense of the main character by the author's Style and the storyline is no slouch. I would recommend this to be read.

Meant for a younger audience

Characters seemed under developed and single dimensional with no range of emotion beyond their archetype. Many phrases were used to exhaustion in the book. There seem to be no emotional growth, although perhaps some skill growth. The same questions were reiterated time and time again over three books, and there was no definitive knowledge gained about the source of magic, the laws of magic or the history,0 culture or society.
