Publisher's summary

The Downs, the poor district of the city of Avarest, is home to cutthroats and thieves, pickpockets and prostitutes, all of whom pay tribute to one of two powerful crime bosses.

It is also home to Aaron Envelar, a disillusioned sellsword known as the Silent Blade, who cares nothing for the criminal overlords or their schemes, who only wants to survive and make a little coin in the process.

But when a group of unwitting thugs steal his mother’s necklace, the only link he has to his murdered parents, Aaron decides that sometimes gold isn’t enough - sometimes, blood is the only payment worth taking. And whatever else will come, this time, he will not be silent. After all, when you take everything from a man, what else does he have to lose?

Medieval John Wick

This novella seemed like a quick listen, but the words spoken even at 1.5 speed seemed to linger with the weight of anvils when transcribed by Steven Brand and directed by Jacob Peppers detailed writing.

However, as the title states, it sends strong “medieval John Wick” vibes. This isn’t necessarily bad; it differs in story of course but character mannerisms, dialogue and combat tactics are much better envisioned when comparing them to scenes of the famous action movie bent on the passion for revenge of an assassin.

The feeling that this listen slighted me was only prevalent when I remembered that I have seen this story before. I have to say though, it’s a fantastic little novella that is a great stand alone story. That’s what I thought it was when I first added it to my library... turns out that there’s a whole series that I have to listen to know...

Wow….. just wow !

So I got a hold of this book merely by accident looking around for something good to listen to. I was pleasantly surprised by the characters, story line, and I’m not ashamed to say, the sheer violence that happened in this very short, two hour reading. Get busy with this book. It’s awesome. I will be checking out every single book that has to do with this series.

Good fun

The reader is stupendous.
The story is really good.
A little too gory for my taste but excellently written. Suspenseful and you can’t stop listening.
I also love shorter story … it was an enjoyable length. Can do it all in one or two sittings I like that.

He has some skills! Awesome!

What can I say...I like a guy who is smart with a conscience, has baggage, but kicks ass and ends up fixing everything despite being near death the entire time. Loved it!

Brilliant

A brilliant little short story of the Dark Fantasy genre.
The narrator doesn’t do fancy voices, but his raspy tone is perfect for the story and environment, and his different inflections are more then enough to differentiate characters. 5 stars through and through.

Short and sweet

I have never read anything from this author, but I'm glad I listened to this short story. Great characters and story. The narrator was perfect as well. Well done!

Wow, I LOVED IT

I downloaded this book because there was a review that called this series "Medieval John Wick" and with that alone I was interested. The narrator, Steven Brand is amazing. I first heard him on "The Pariah" (which was a great book by the way) and I enjoyed him then and I really enjoyed him here. This is my second gritty fantasy audiobook and I have to say I really am loving these type of stories. I personally enjoy Game of Thrones type of fantasy as well as Lord of the Rings.

The character Aaron Envelar was my type of protagonist from the start. I am going to purchase and listen to the rest of the books in this story. This story was a quick revenge story that introduces you to the character and it tells you everything you need to know without telling you too much. I'm pretty sure this is one of those stories that was released after the main stories so if I want more backstory with character I have to read the main stories.

Anyway I strongly recommend this audiobook if you enjoy gritty medieval stories
