Publisher's summary

An instant New York Times best seller!

USA Today's top 100 books to read while stuck at home social distancing

"No-one does suburban paranoia like Shari Lapena - this slowly unfurling nightmare will have you biting your nails until the end." (Ruth Ware, number-one New York Times best-selling author of The Woman in Cabin 10)

The new domestic suspense novel from New York Times best-selling author of The Couple Next Door, A Stranger in the House, and An Unwanted Guest, Shari Lapena

Maybe you don't know your neighbors as well as you thought you did....

"This is a very difficult letter to write. I hope you will not hate us too much.... My son broke into your home recently while you were out."

In a quiet, leafy suburb in upstate New York, a teenager has been sneaking into houses - and into the owners' computers as well - learning their secrets, and maybe sharing some of them, too.

Who is he, and what might he have uncovered? After two anonymous letters are received, whispers start to circulate, and suspicion mounts. And when a woman down the street is found murdered, the tension reaches the breaking point. Who killed her? Who knows more than they're telling? And how far will all these very nice people go to protect their own secrets?

In this neighborhood, it's not just the husbands and wives who play games. Here, everyone in the family has something to hide....

You never really know what people are capable of.

Critic reviews

"Slyly plotted...Lapena skillfully maximizes suspense with her dual story lines that eventually collide, as well as some deft misdirection...many fans of domestic suspense will be satisfied.” (Publishers Weekly)

"Poised and chilling.” (Wall Street Journal)

Someone We Know is a tour de force of thriller writing. Shari Lapena proves yet again that she is the mistress of the pacy plot, cliff edge tension and menacing suburban claustrophobia. Fans will be delighted and if you haven’t read her books yet, then why on earth not?” (Gilly Macmillan, New York Times best-selling author of The Nanny)

entertainment

I was guessing the whole time of who it was. kept me engaged and wanting to listen to more. There was a time I thought it dragged on some, but it wasnt enough from deterring me to stop listening. All in all was a good book. I'd recommend.

Amazing performance!

I have never listened to a book where the reader had so much character and vocal animation where it truly was a performance! Incredible!

Just OK

I loved Shari Lapena's Not a Happy Family and listened to this book right after for this reason. The pacing and the writing here are still solid. One of my favorite parts about Lapena's books is that she moves the plot along and keeps it engaging without any extra filler. The book is definitely not boring, however, the story is just OK. There is a murder, but I wouldn't call this a murder mystery as much as a domestic/neighborhood soap opera. Some of the details are salacious and characters are one-dimensional and I rolled my eyes quite a few times throughout. The biggest issue for me was that I guessed the ending which I saw coming a mile away.

It kept me guessing

It was quite the riddle.. so kept suspecting everyone and the writer kept me guessing until almost the end. Well done!

Good plot but some issues affected quality

I thought this story had a good plot and good twists, however I didn’t love the writing style nor did I really like the voice actor’s presentation. The characters felt like they had the potential to be more developed and deep, but they all felt relatively surface level and the men and boys in particular felt like they all had the same personality minus “the husband” and the same goes for all of the women.
