Like a friend talking to you

One important thing about this audiobook, is that the author, Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, is the narrator. Narrator is not quite the word actually. He doesn't narrate. He comforts and gently, ever so gently guides the listener to a better place. Where- or whatever that is. JKZ leaves that to you to choose. It is not new-agy, touchy-freely mambo-jumbo. Although he clearly offers techniques used in Yoga, that is not Yoga. Nor is it "spiritual" (although he has a very interesting take on the meaning of that word in another book that I also rated 5 stars: Wherever You Go, There You Are). He is not preaching Buddhism (again, he explains his references to Buddhism in Wherever You Go...). His meditation techniques are down to earth. Precisely. Literally, mentally, physically down to earth.
Even for one who doesn't experience the kind of acute, debilitating chronic pain he mentions in the book, this is a very comforting read. The sound of his voice, the rhythm and tone in his speech pattern make you feel safe. It made me feel I was in a presence of friend who knew me, understood me, and knew what to say to sooth whatever hales me.
It is the kind of book that should be covered by health insurance.

good but requires a lot of time

Many guided meditations are geared to be used while in need of that particular meditation. This is a practice that requires you to follow it for a long period of time to see results. It is a good program but not what I expected.

A must listen for people with pain.

The best pain meditation I've found since my car wreck two years ago. Totally different technique. Way more effective. Thank you for this!

Also his voice is actually calm and soothing.

Managing pain

This blew my mind changed my mind. Helped me very very much. I could barely walk I had so much chronic hip pain from a disease.
I listened to this. And did the practice religiously. And was less afraid of the fear and pain that came up. It’s true what he says. It’s work Hard work. Very hard but worth it. I become more focused and relaxed. And stronger. And braver. And freeze and loved life more.

Wonderful for meditation for pain

I wish there were more of his audiobooks. He is one of my go to listens when my pain wakes me up screaming in the middle of the night or in the early morning. It doesn’t even feel like you’re meditating. He has this energy about him that competes with the pain and draws you in. Everything that he says is true. Teaches you how to meditate. Before you know it you’re done, and the pain has abated to a certain extent and you are feeling more in control. A big thank you to this man for the work that he’s done.
