"I know of no better guide for couples who genuinely desire a maturing relationship." (M. Scott Peck, author of The Road Less Traveled)
The ideas here were the key to being able to really communicate about problems and appreciate the good in our relationship! No other book has been so valuable. The authors years of experience are evident!
I found this book useful, inspiring, and immediately implementable. It helped me understand myself, my wife, and what I needed to do to improve my marriage. I would make this required reading by law for anyone married on planning to get married. I would recommend this book to anyone.
I really wanted to like this book, but the narrator's style was so annoying I couldn't listen long enough to get to the first chapter. His style was too dramatic and over-acted for the material and thus came across as condescending and inauthentic. Good narration should add to, not detract from, the material being read. Unfortunately, the listening samples aren't long enough to allow one to determine whether a particular style is well suited to the content, and what may be palatable in a short sample can easily become a distraction over a longer period.
Harville Hendrix and Helen are amazing individuals. I can't tell you how many times I thought that they might be spying on me to get their insight because the things they were saying rang true in my life and those were the specific things I was looking for answers to. I really enjoyed this book and the fact that they give you knowledge you can start using immediately.
None, but I do love Making Marriage Simple too!
This book does have some helpful advice amongst a lot of information I feel that was not helpful and could of been left out. Would suggest for both people in the relationship to read it for maximum benefit .
Harville explains that our adult relationships are to heal our childhood pain. It explained everything wrong with my past relationships and helped to understand things so much clearer. This should be in every marriage counselor, priest or pastor and psych offices!
Multiple stories to help you understand the concepts
patience with him and me!!!!!!!!!
if you are having problems with relationships get this book!
(and if you can get past the cheesy title.) Basic techniques to understand yourself better by looking deeply into yourself, then help your relationships with everyone, by learning to communicate better (yes, i know it sounds cliche), and really, deeply understand others. Read it, then attend his seminars.
It was only one book, how did I end up like this?
This book is about going deep and really digging under the surface. I strongly suggest it to any couple who's interested in lasting relationship.
I really hated the mixing of different audio files... I guess some parts of the audiobook were from the old version and some from the new version. Poorly mixed, really.
First, I do think some of their conclusions come his spiritual beliefs. Particularly the idea that there is a purpose to the disfunction in our love relationships, specifically, that they exist for us to heal childhood wounds. I would agree that there is a serendipitous opportunity for healing in relationship. However, a purpose presupposes some design. I don't see any way to prove that. Nor do I see it as necessary for the other conclusions to be valid. That being said, the book is full of a lot of useful techniques. I've particularly valued the mirroring techniques over the years. Using the ritual form of the mirroring is useful, since as soon as you say, "Let me if I got this," your partner may start to relax, knowing that you are trying to hear what they have to say. I find this a very practical book.
