Publisher's Summary

When it comes to sex, common wisdom holds that men roam while women crave closeness and commitment. But in this provocative, headline-making book, Daniel Bergner turns everything we thought we knew about women's arousal and desire inside out. Drawing on extensive research and interviews with renowned behavioral scientists, sexologists, psychologists, and everyday women, he forces us to reconsider long-held notions about female sexuality.

This bold and captivating journey into the world of female desire explores answers to such thought-provoking questions as: Are women perhaps the less monogamous sex? What effect do intimacy and emotional connection really have on lust? What is the role of narcissism - the desire to be desired - in female sexuality? Are political gains for women ("No means no") detrimental in the bedroom? And is the hunt for a "female Viagra" anything but a search for the cure for monogamy?

Bergner goes behind the scenes of some of the most groundbreaking experiments on sexuality today and confronts us with controversial, sometimes uncomfortable findings. Incendiary, profoundly insightful, and brilliantly illuminating, What Do Women Want? will change the conversation about women and sex, and is sure to spark dynamic discussion for years to come.

    "Useful, but not for me!"

As a gay man, I am always looking for books that enlighten me on interesting sexual studies concerning female sexuality. Call it research for my friends. This was an interesting book with several stories about different methods of sex research that has been conducted on the female. While it does not focus specifically on one aspect of female sexuality, its sometimes rambling nature had me distracted and thinking of other things. I am sure that to someone, it was very important information. For me, it was a "not so much" kind of thing.

There was amazing information in this book. Of note is the length at which many of the researchers go in order to properly identify the level of arousal in women. With men, it seems rather simple, but as proved once again that the female sex and sexuality is a very complicated and complex study. I was shocked to discover how very little research has been done in this field. It is definitely an uptapped field that will hopefully bear fruit in the upcoming years.

While fairly light reading (an effort to write on a clear and straight forward fashion is evident), I would not consider it fluff.

If you are interested in what makes women tick, this book is for you.

    "illuminating and satisfying"

a book every women should listen to not only for insight into the female libido, but also extremely satisfying for all of you out there who, like me, have spent their lives feeling as if the language that centers around female sexuality is so far off the mark as to be almost a fiction.

    "Well? What Do Women Want??"
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

I would not recommend this book, as it does not result in any clearer understanding of what women want than the average man already has - at least, if I am 'average'.

If you’ve listened to books by Daniel Bergner before, how does this one compare?

    Not applicable.

Have you listened to any of Charles Pasternak’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

No. However I thought the narration excellent on this one.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I was especially moved by the relation of a couple of stories about women who, while know what the 'wished' for, were and are hampered by society's mores (although what they wished for seems to me to be quite harmless, our Victorian attitudes make it socially risky for women to express themselves).

    Any additional comments?

I found it disappointing that, while the question "What Do Women Want" is a long-time urgent one for everybody, a book that purports to tell us the answer left me with the exact same understanding, and questions, as I already had. Apparently there is a good reason why nobody knows.

"Compilation of anegdotes, no evidence presented"
What disappointed you about What Do Women Want??

The author discounts evolutionary biology and even FMRI scan studies, but instead presents only anegdotes, interviews and one scientifical study which has a much more plausable explanation (given in the book but only towards the end). The book proves only 2 things, proven before by many studies:1. That people who marry early are more dissatisfied with relationships (as heroines of all his anegdotes did)2. Evolution has equipped women with mechanism that allowes them to prevent damage to their reproductive organs during intercourse. This is it, and the book is only about blowing this out of proportion to prove author's agenda, which is allot more political than scientific

What aspect of Charles Pasternak’s performance would you have changed?

Charles's intonation could be more active during his reading

    "Can I get an answer?"

This book was disappointing. I'm not sure how you can have a question as the title of your book and NOT answer the question!!!

I give the author credit as there was obviously a lot of research put into this book. I feel that the author goes off on tangents often and does not weave it all together very well.

There is hints at a few possible answers however there is no definitive answers. I Come out of the other side with more questions than answers.

There was potential for a great book but I cannot recommend this book.

    "Perverted"
Has What Do Women Want? turned you off from other books in this genre?

    Yes

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from What Do Women Want??

This book is not about what women want. It is about what perverted women want, and the author wants people to think this is normal.

    Any additional comments?

    Disgusting
