Publisher's Summary

The second novel set in the Old Republic era and based on the massively multiplayer online game Star Wars: The Old Republic ramps up the action and brings listeners "face-to-face" for the first time with a Sith warrior to rival the most sinister of the Order’s Dark Lords: Darth Malgus, the mysterious, masked Sith of the wildly popular “Deceived” and “Hope” game trailers.

Malgus brought down the Jedi Temple on Coruscant in a brutal assault that shocked the galaxy. But if war crowned him the darkest of Sith heroes, peace would transform him into something far more heinous - something Malgus would never want to be, but cannot stop, any more than he can stop the rogue Jedi fast approaching.

Her name is Aryn Leneer - and the lone Knight that Malgus cut down in the fierce battle for the Jedi Temple was her Master. And now she’s going to find out what happened to him - even if it means breaking every rule in the book.

More in The Old Republic series we have. And listen to all of our Star Wars titles you can!

    "Another Great Old Republic novel"

Yes, as the tittle of my review says, this novel was very well writen, placing great emphasis on the dualities of the Force. Darth Malgus gives a great explanation as to what being a Sith is, from a certain point of view. Paul Kemp makes the reader actually care about the characters involved and shows how useless dealing in absolutes is (light, dark, good, evil etc.) This is enjoyed even more when the reader has watched the trailers for the upcoming MMO. The scenes in the novel are actually depicted in all its action! Thumbs up!

    "Excellent"

Loses nothing relative to the other SW saga reads. Definitely adds an edge and a real psychological insight into the mind of a warrior absent from the others. The author's knowledge of the martial arts is particularly impressive. Looking forward to more from him in and out of this series.

"You can never go wrong with The Old Republic"

It seems like all Jedi and Sith were way more power in The Old Republic. I hope the writers keep on telling the stories of the forgotten empire and Marko Ragnos, Naga Sadow, Darth Malgus, etc..... I hope to see this animated or movies or both!

    "Better than expected"

    The Sith and the supporting non jedi cast steal the show. The Sith agenda and in-fighting was very entertaining. Novel had good pacing with minimal story line jumps {unlike the Jedi Outcast series}

"Knights of the Old Republic Deceived"

Many have seen the trailer depicting Sith warriors converging upon the Jedi Temple on Coruscant killing and ultimately destroying the Jedi Order and the Republic in one devastating swift surprise attack. This book which opens up the world that the Knights of the Old Republic MMO will be focused on takes you there with this audible book brought to you by Audible.com. The voice talent of Paul Kemp kept me thoroughly enthralled throughout. The sound effects were excellent and in keeping with the Star Wars tradition of sounds you would expect to hear from a Star Wars franchise. The surprises in this chapter of a galaxy far far away will keep you on edge and entwined for hours. This book is a must have for fans of the Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic.

    "Yeeeeaah."

Im very excited about TOR books. Star wars has had the same charactors scince the movies. This series is a fresh spin on an old favorite. I love the new charactors and storylines. If you are a SW fan I think you will love this book.

"He does it again! This narrator beats them all."

*Reposting my other review because I feel the same about this book and narrator.*

The audio book was excellent. The narrator, Marc Thompson, did an amazing job with this audio book and others! I have listened to many audiobooks, and this guy makes his work come alive. His studio puts some amazing B.G.M., sound effects, voices, etc. into their books! This is an absolute listen.

Only problem is when they announce each chapter, it bugs out a bit. There is no problem with the book or anything else. It's just the chapter announcement that is a teensy bit buggy.

    "As Expected"

Story is unsurprising and a fine listen is you are a Star Wars fan. The narration was good, with each character easily identified. The sound effects and music could get in the way at times, but did add to the story in others.

I would recommend it for Star Wars fans, but for those just after a good Sci-Fi story I would have to say there are countless better options.

    "Fantastic easy listening but shallow"

I really enjoyed this book, there is very little story (one might even say shallow) but the way it was written and narrated more than made up for the lack of grey matter needed to listen.
It felt like one huge lightsaber battle through the book (and lets be honest who doesn't watch Star Wars for those!)
The narration was probably the best I've ever had the pleasure to listen to!
The narrator handled the different voices brilliantly and was almost breathless with excitement, he really got into his role and I think his enthusiasm was contagious.
This is one of the few books I'd easily listen to more than once and can heartily recommend it if you want an action packed story with first rate exciting narration as well as the obligatory and oh so famous Star Wars universe sound effects that really bang the action home and make you feel really immersed.
Just don't expect a deep storyline, the book is an excuse for action and more action.
    Luckily the action is great!
Just to add, I can't get enough of Marc Thompson's narration (after listening to Reven as well) and intend to work my way through all the books he's narrated.

    "Great fun"

Great fun. Can't wait to listen to the next one. Corny in places, no doubt, but it fulfilled its expectation to be fun. I enjoyed it so much I listened twice!

The one thing I didn't like was the rather graphic attention to detail during fight scenes. I felt it was superfluous to requirements and actually detracted from the plot rather than adding to it, as the description of the sound someone's arm makes as it is twisted and breaks takes rather a lot of print (and leaves me wincing). I wanted to get on with the story.

    "Fantastic for a first timer!"

This is the first time i've ever listened to an Audio book and also the first ever Star Wars book. It's fantastic and clear to follow, the story is gripping and the characters make you feel for them. The reader's voice is brilliant and very easy to listen to.

    Fantastic.

    "Enjoyable!"

It's great that I can take in these Star Wars books as audio... it saves a lot of time!! Don't you read then re-read chapters when it's in print? I liked this one by Paul S Kemp. It has scope, imagination and a couple of well drawn (if unoriginal) characters. Don't take that badly...he has done well here. I suspect strongly that he had to pass a committee and deal with a lot of flak to write this and it shows. It would have been a better book still if he'd been left to write what he wanted.

If you omitted the light sabre fights, a murderously angry Sith Lord but kept the revenge, morality and ethical wrestling. It almost felt like Star Trek of old. I don't mind the blending. This was a good story, watered down a bit (and a little predictable) but still enjoyable. I liked Fatal Alliance because those characters were a little closer to my idea of the Sith. The dedicated, devout, arrogant and damaged Dark Lord's who seek power at all costs and always exude the distinct impression that we light-siders don't understand the force. How could we?

Here... Paul drew the picture of a damaged and nuanced Sith who fought with his feelings relating to a love interest. Yes... you heard that right... a Sith Lord who was in a love relationship!! Okay... she WAS his slave, and he had murdered a similar Twi-Lek woman just like her as a teenager... but he actually loved her and she returned his feelings as best she could.

If that doesn't get you going; then there is the outrageous desecration of the Jedi Temple by fifty red sabre wielding Sith Warriors and a Mandalorian. I'd seen a short CGI video of it on Youtube and thrilled as I realised that this book is the counterpart of that story. Good ol' George Lucas must have been SO jealous when he saw THAT plot. I would have preferred more backstory to our Sith villain and more depth to the other characters but recognise that this is probably just my being spoiled by George RR Martin & Joe Abercrombie. It's exciting stuff, not as layered as some might like but still fun and still Star Wars.

The force is strong in this one.

    "Interesting backstory"

Very much one for Star Wars fans so I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't a fan. Assuming you are a fan, the novel develops its characters well and listening you do start to get engaged with what might happen to them which is an achievement in a book so full of scifi escapism!

The writing won't win prizes but is good enough not to distract from the story.

Like the previous one, Revan, it is a highly produced audio-book with sound effects. I don't like or dislike this especially, but it is a distinct style worth knowing about before you buy!

    "Cheese Sandwich : )"

Everything is relative. I like the occasional cheese sandwich, and that's what this book gives you. The author and narration (and sound effects) are excellent. I expected the standard SW fare of crazy action and emotional battles and got it.

That said, there are several places where character motivation (or is that the SW universe) feels so corny that I found myself saying 'come on - surely you could have done better'.
