Publisher's summary

Accountant turned professional monster hunter Owen Zastava Pitt managed to stop the nefarious Old Ones' invasion plans last year, but as a result made an enemy out of one of the most powerful beings in the universe. Now an evil death cult known as the Church of the Temporary Mortal Condition wants to capture Owen in order to gain the favor of the great Old Ones. The Condition is led by a fanatical necromancer known as the Shadow Man. The government wants to capture the Shadow Man and has assigned the enigmatic Agent Franks to be Owen's full-time bodyguard, which is a polite way of saying that Owen is monster bait.

With supernatural assassins targeting his family, a spy in their midst, and horrific beasties lurking around every corner, Owen and the staff of Monster Hunter International don't need to go hunting, because this time the monsters are hunting them. Fortunately, this bait is armed and very dangerous.

Critic reviews

"This lighthearted, testosterone-soaked sequel to 2009's Monster Hunter International will delight fans of action horror with elaborate weaponry, hand-to-hand combat, disgusting monsters, and an endless stream of blood and body parts." ( Publishers Weekly)

My Favorite So Far

This was my favorite of the three Monster Hunter books I've listened to so far. (Yes, I know it's second in the series but I listened to this after book 3.) It got a bit much in the last 30 minutes or so but otherwise I loved it. The first book had very long action scenes. I like the descriptive detail but they got to be a little long. This book had action but those scenes were, for the most part, no so long that I felt tired afterward.

Narrator was great and does a good job with women's voices - doesn't make them sound like whiny school girls like some male narrators do.

A good read

I have come to like the series even tho I am not usually a fan of "gun porn" due to the characterization and the voice performance.

Good Part 2, Superb Narrator

Monster Hunter Vendetta is the second book in the Monster Hunter Series and much like the first it's filled with monsters, guns, violence, bloodshed, more guns, creepy creatures, heroes, more guns, villains, weird supernatural phenomena...and did I mention guns? Seriously though, I am officially hooked on this series. Correia does a great job of taking the monster genre to a whole new level. Although the second book in the series is not as riveting as the first - it was still a good story and I'm looking forward to listening to the third installment.

What I'm most impressed with is the narrator, Oliver Wyman. I am his new fan. Mr. Wyman in my opinion is by far the best narrator in the audible stable. He has a wide-range of voices - I'm not sure I've heard him repeat one from another story yet - it's quite amazing. He does a great job of not only reading the story - but as a good narrator should - acting it out. (The guy must have had some thespian training along the way.)

Overall Vendetta is good - it gets bogged down in the middle but then picks back up - and of course I was kept interested along the way with Mr. Wyman's expert narration.

And Z is at it again!

Correia did a good job with this one, and I'll keep reading these, but why the asides? This is a growing trend in books and it isn't a good one. Don't tell me a story within a story when a character could give a synopsis of past events and make it a smoother flow to the reading. Other than that, I truly enjoy this series and recommend it to anyone who enjoys supernatural without the teenage girl romance and glittery vamps!

Take the ball from MHI and just keeps running.

Okay, I was really happy with Monster Hunter International.

There is nothing that I said about that book that doesn't apply to this, with the exception of the stuff about how MHI was an excellent "First book". Actually, I could even expound on that, because one didn't realise how much of the stage for this book was being set.

I expect that the author had this book in mind while he was writing the first; we learn more details about things that we thought were fully explained, or some things we just accepted as they were. It's handled expertly. A few of the threads from the first book are resolved, a few left open, more threads are introduced. Relationships develop and change.

I was very relieved that the return of Grant Jeffries did not re-open the romantic competition-- that's a settled thing, nobody's gonna mess with that.

Again, the reader is spectacular. Again, exposition is handled deftly, and with an excellent plot device. Again, there is a broad reliance on archetypes and the Lovecraft influence is even more defined (they don't call the Necronomicon by name. But they don't give it another one, either). Another fantasy icon is plagiarised, but I won't spoil which one... and it's done well.

Again, there's a single storyline that's followed to completion. There's a lot more left open for the series to pursue, but it's not so much that it takes any satisfaction away from the storyline, and there's no "Your princess is in another castle" hooey.

And Again, you'll buy the next book because you want more of the same. I know I will.

Awesome!

Definitly start with book 1, "Monster Hunters International" in order to understand many of the references in this book.

Larry Correia has an amazing imagination and comes up with some of the craziest creatures. I think that in almost any other story I would have thought that some of them were just silly, but somehow, in the context of the story, they seemed perfectly plausible.
