Editorial reviews

Why we think it's Essential - Quick, who directed The Evil Dead? What action hero starred in The Blob? Which movie studio became synonymous with horror for producing Frankenstein and The Wolf Man? If you can answer these questions correctly, you'll likely be thrilled with Monster Hunter International. B-movie aficionados know there's a fine line between gleefully gory camp and flat-out dross. Not to worry, Monster Hunter International knows the line. Oliver Wyman brings just the right amount of bombastic, smirking swagger to this story of big guns, big action, and a heck of a lot of monsters. —Michael

Publisher's summary

Five days after Owen Zastava Pitt pushed his insufferable boss out of a 14th story window, he woke up in the hospital with a scarred face, an unbelievable memory, and a job offer.

It turns out that monsters are real. All the things from myth, legend, and B-movies are out there, waiting in the shadows. Officially secret, some of them are evil, and some are just hungry. On the other side are the people who kill monsters for a living. Monster Hunter International is the premier eradication company in the business. And now Owen is their newest recruit.

It's actually a pretty sweet gig, except for one little problem. An ancient entity known as the Cursed One has returned to settle a centuries-old vendetta. Should the Cursed One succeed, it means the end of the world, and MHI is the only thing standing in his way.

With the clock ticking towards Armageddon, Owen finds himself trapped between legions of undead minions, belligerent federal agents, a cryptic ghost who has taken up residence inside his head, and the cursed family of the woman he loves. Business is good.... Welcome to Monster Hunter International.

A Judicious Application of Heavy Artillary

A fantasy story for redneck gun nuts about fighting vampires, zombies and every other kind of un-dead! Solid action from one end to the other with plenty of tech talk about guns to peak every gun lover's fantasy... and their vehicle of choice? A Russian Hind-D attack helicopter - ofcourse. Flown by a heavy metal listening "something" that you'll find out more about when you listen. Voice modulation of all the characters was spot on. Great narration. An accountant from Dallas gets attacked by a werewolf (his boss) and manages to survive the attack after throwing his boss out of an office window. He winds up being recruited by a clandestine team of monster hunters and an old Jewish man who lives in his head. Great story. Lots of sarcastic humor as one bizzarre thing happens after another.

Thought I would try the book and it

If you like 80's action movies, horror movies, guns, comedy, and awesome, then you need this book.
This is the first three books of the "Monster Hunters" series. If, like Larry, you like b-grade horror movies and guns, you'll love this series. In a world where monsters are real & the government is keeping them secret, Monster Hunters International can be thought of as being along the lines of Blackwater with silver bullets. Great action scenes, compelling characters, and enough humor to keep things from being too grim. A great read!

Loved every minute of it, lol!

Great adventure and lots of laughs! Nice blend of syfy and fantasy. I don't know anything about guns but the explanations were just right, enough info to give understanding of how each weapon would impact the target, helped to understand strength and weakness and when would be needed.

I respectfully disagree with those that thought this had a right wing political agenda. My opinion is that to create a setting in which monsters are real the author had to use the "conspiracy" angle, it’s just fun fiction.

I also saw a review or two that commented on lack of character development but I'm a reader that prefers to fill in blank spaces with my own imagination. I thought each character was fun and developed in a way that gave me room to fill in any blanks.

I can’t wait to get started on the next book! What a great read when you just want to get away from reality!

I was curious about the author and did a quick google, if I understand right he self published this originally and later got picked up by a publishing house. I love that he chased his dream and took a risk that paid off for him. Kudos!!

Like a tricycle down a steep hill, FUN.

I can't actually remember what drew me to purchase this book in the first place. I'm sure it was a sale, or a discount of some kind. I've listened to several interesting military style books that involve combat of some kind, and initially i assumed this book would be more of the same overly testosterone machismo where the main character makes all the right choices, comes out unscathed and gets the girls.. yawn. I was surprised by the self deprecating nature of our hero and how mostly down to earth he was. The gun culture of the story is a bit much, but the character is well developed and mostly believable. In later books his background is flushed out even more and some of the obvious gun and prepper aspects of his character become more forgivable. The whole destine to save the world aspect is starting to get old, but the fun factor has me ignoring this slight annoyance. I didn't initially realize that the book was 24 hours long, but i found myself enjoying the false plateaus and when the finale finally did come it was enjoyable and left me wanting more.

A fun listen for sure !

Overall this was a pretty enjoyable 'read'. The characters are fun, the overall story is engaging, and its a fun world to explore.
I do feel like the writing is a tad on the basic side, and it gets very predictable in places. Would recommend it for a light read / casual listen for sure.

MHI takes you down some interesting paths

MHI is not your normal monster hunter story. This one has some twists and turns that leaving you wondering how you got where you are. It also has a dash romance but just enough to keep all listeners interested. I would love to see this made in to a mini series but only if they didn't change the main story progression.
