Publisher's summary

Keep on the Borderlands was one of the very first D&D adventures, so seasoned gamers remember this product from their early days, and newer gamers will recognize it from the 25th anniversary rerelease. Greyhawk novels are based on the classic D&D modules from this world and provide listeners with the same kind of feeling that they get playing classic D&D modules.

Just what it needed to be.

Many have panned this book's pacing, but I disagree. The long build up to the climax helps to flesh out the key characters, and give the world an lived in feel. More than any other Forgotten Realms, or Pathfinder Tales novel this really does feel like a D&D campaign. I feel it should be required reading as an example of how to plan for an adventure.

The module is better than the book

What did you like best about Keep on the Borderlands? What did you like least?

I really wanted to like this book, but it was okay at best. The performance was fine, the story just takes entirely too long to get going. Those of you who are D&D players likely like me have fond memories of this module. Remember how the background and information about the environment around the keep was there but relatively short, and the information about the caves was extensive? This book is the opposite. I did not hate the book, it was an okay read, but I was disappointed and it is by far the weakest book of the six in this series.

Has Keep on the Borderlands turned you off from other books in this genre?

No.

What about Bernard Setaro Clark’s performance did you like?

Character voices.

Was Keep on the Borderlands worth the listening time?

Yes, but just barely. I finished it and didn't quit listening, if that means anything.

Any additional comments?

Read the other books in this series, there are some real gems in there.

of the greyhawks series, this one has been the worst. Very slow story and not enough character development

Great Story!

the keep on the borderlands was a great adventure when it was first written ages ago. In fact, I went back and pulled out the old adventure just to see how well it lined up with the story. Come to find out, it lined up perfectly. Including, treasure, monsters, & a surprise bit near the end. overall, this is a great story taking a classic Dungeons and Dragons adventure, and putting what we do around the table into a novel.

Loved it.

One of my favorite tales from years ago was glad to be able to listen to it nowadays as my paperback is long gone. Worth a trip down memory lane.

Just like the adventure module

As a consumer and D&D player what I wanted from this book was to experience the Keep on the Borderlands in novel form. Through the vehicle of several characters from the book I experienced multiple memorable moments from the module. The battle with the Ogre from cave G. Exploration and battles from Cave K. Orc and Goblin battles from cave B and C. Kobold adventures from Cave A. And hints about the evil minotaur in the maze cave. Loved the book. Very well done.

It’s Fine…

The Paul Kidd books in the series are much better. The story is just fine, not great or compelling. Read the Paul Kidd books first and save these for later when you are bored.

Another Good One

A big change having the main character as female, and a welcome one. Though I've both run this adventure as a DM and played in it as a character, I never felt like Ru was confined by the structure of the original adventure. I really enjoyed the overall story, but more importantly, I really liked how Ru did it. For the first time, I really appreciate the direction the author took on this. The characters are interesting and really feels like a D&D game that was played back when the adventure first came out.

Very enjoyable.
