Critic reviews

"There is zombie fiction and then there is crawl-out-of-the-grave-and-drag-you-to-hell zombie fiction. Day by Day Armageddon is hands down the best zombie book I have ever read. Dawn of the Dead meets 28 Days Later doesn't even come close to describing how fantastic this thriller is. It is so real, so terrifying, and so well written that I slept with not one, but two loaded Glocks under my pillow for weeks afterwards. J. L. Bourne is the new king of hardcore zombie action!" (Brad Thor, New York Times #1 best-selling author)

Never a dull moment, the beginning of something sp

This was J.L. Bournes first venture into writing publicly and he nailed every aspect of it. Phenomenal world building, character structuring and arc. This book is best read in physical copy and if you do listen, understand it's written in a journalist format. Read this, the next and everything else he has to offer. They're all spectacular in their own way.

Narrator Jay Snyder is a perfect fit!

DAY BY DAY ARMAGEDDON is an end of the word zombie apocalypse story told in journal format reminding me of I AM LEGEND but only in a less...I don’t know, lonely maybe?...sort of way. I guess the difference is while Matheson’s first hand zombie account had a very isolated hopelessness about it, Bourne’s journal entries were full of humanity and hope. The protagonist, a military pilot, isn’t left hold up on his own to slowly lose his mind with only the dead to interact with. He does move and band with other survivors and even in the despair of the situation and in the face of immense loss he seems to keep his head up for the most part. So what could have easily played out as a very depressing read, considering the topic, DAY BY DAY ARMAGEDDON didn’t leave me feeling dejected. I found J.L. Bourne’s writing to be an easy read and I liked the “fight” and resourcefulness of our pilot. I was definitely drawn in enough to be interested in continuing on with the next installment.

short but great

This book is well worth the credit. If you are like me and looking for something to listen to while waiting for the sequel to The Passage by Justin Cronin this book will work. I put off getting this book for a while because I didn't think I would like listening to some guys journal entries but it "reads" like most books except you don't have to hear the dorky wanna cool name of the main character a thousand times ie Dash Shadowrider and the like. If you are expecting the literary mastery of Cronin you may not like this book, but if you want a solid story give it a try. The sequel is pretty good too.

Well written with an unfortunate, abrupt ending

Bourne definitely has a flair for the gritty realism that one would consider a baseline for a zombie tale in this day in age. The narrative is just interesting enough to give it some air in a genre filled with mediocre screed. It really deserves 3 1/2 stars for the abrupt ending - a little heavy handed, in terms of a possible sequel, but maybe that's a testament to how disappointed I was that the ride was over? As a private pilot myself I appreciated following their journeys on a map (nerd alert!).

A must download for zombie fans

This is a great book. Those who compare this to the Zombie Survival Guide are wrong. This is better and the plot develops much more complexity in the second book. Unlike Brooks, Bourne knows his military and firearms terminology. There are no stupid “clip” references, when the author means magazine, in this novel.

Very Good story

Where does Day By Day Armageddon rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

For a zombie book this is different the style of writing, as in a journal is the difference it is descriptive as it should be and well planned and spoken

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

I certainly felt the 'closeness' sensations of the un-dead and how they gave the creeps

A Zombie book that keeps you reading.

What did you like best about Day By Day Armageddon? What did you like least?

Despite the fact zombies have been done to death, I kept reading. I had to find out the ending.

Would you be willing to try another book from J L Bourne? Why or why not?

Yes. He paints a picture without becoming tedious. He keeps the action moving without loosing the reader.

Would you listen to another book narrated by Jay Snyder?

Sure.

If this book were a movie would you go see it?

Not sure. Books don't always translate well. It seems to lend itself well to the medium though.

Any additional comments?

The ending was unfinished. I would like something a little more final.
