Editorial reviews

Charlotte “Charley” Davidson is not your stereotypical Grim Reaper. She’s sexy, sassy, and likes to help dead people with unfinished business before they cross. She’s more of a bright light kind of girl than a hood with an axe. For her day job, Charley is an Albuquerque private investigator and a consultant to her police detective uncle. Lately, her nights have been steamed up with dreams of a hot mystery lover who may or may not be real. It’s chick-lit meets paranormal with a touch of mystery in the buzz-worthy First Grave on the Right.

Inevitably, this book will be compared to Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum series. They both have feisty female protagonists, snappy dialogue, and zany characters. Veteran narrator Lorelei King also performs the Stephanie Plum books and is well-cast in this novel. What makes her fantastic in the Plum series is her ability to define the voices of all the secondary characters and inject them with interest and distinct personalities. In this performance, she does not disappoint. King seamlessly switches among the characters and has fantastic comedic timing. She elevates the work and keeps the laughs coming.

This is a debut novel from Darynda Jones. It will not be her last; this is clearly a launch for a series. There’s quite a bit of set-up as Charley begins to understand more of her abilities and the presence of other supernatural beings. Jones has created an interesting premise and characters. The mystery element is weak, however, and the writing is on the mediocre side. Jones is at her best with witty dialogue and keeps things moving at a brisk pace. Overall, it’s a fun, breezy listen and an enjoyable escape.

Fans of Janet Evanovich, Lorelei King, and paranormal romance will want to give this new series a listen. Julie MacDonald

Publisher's summary

First Grave on the Right is the smashing, award-winning debut novel that introduces Charley Davidson: part-time private investigator and full-time Grim Reaper.

Charley sees dead people. That's right, she sees dead people. And it's her job to convince them to "go into the light." But when these very dead people have died under less than ideal circumstances (i.e., murder), sometimes they want Charley to bring the bad guys to justice. Complicating matters are the intensely hot dreams she's been having about an Entity who has been following her all her life...and it turns out he might not be dead after all. In fact, he might be something else entirely.

This is a thrilling debut novel from Darynda Jones, an exciting newcomer to the world of paranormal romantic suspense.

First Grave on the Right is the winner of the 2012 Rita Award for Best First Book.

Keep chilled: spend some more time with Charley Davidson.

AMAZING STORY LINE AND BOOK

I did not read the print version however I would consider audio books better due to the ability to have a narrator read and you are able to get a different picture in your mind of the story.

I 'm so confused

First, let me say I did very much enjoy this book. I liked the story line and the characters. I will read the remaining books in the series. Now, why did I only give it four stars instead of five? Because the whole time I felt like I was listening to a work by Janet Evonavich. Did Janet clone herself? I absolutely love Ms. Evonavich's books. Ms. Jones has beautifully duplicated her writing style in every aspect. I loved the dialog especially the comedic aspect. I kept waiting for Lula, Ranger or Gramma Masser to pop up but all in all I still enjoyed the story. Hopefully as the books evolve, I will feel less like I'm reading a Stephanie Plum adventure and more like a Charlie Davidson escapade.

Wow....

I downloaded this book probably almost one year after I had purchsed it. I could kick myself. Once I listened to this book, quickly hurried to download the rest located on audible. I rarely find books who's storyline gets better and better with each book. I LOVE Charlie.....She is sooo freakin funny......I hope this series doesn't end anytime soon. I see that the fifth book is coming out this year "2013" I will be right there to purchase it. This book is soooo worth the credit.

something different

Funny tidbits mixed in with some sad stories all tied together with an interesting twist on the Reaper. As this is a series I am not sure how well it will progress. All in all it was an acceptable read.

Fun but a bit western mythos heavy

The story was engrossing and the protagonist entirely enjoyable. The writing style is both playful and believable, and King's narration perfectly conveys this. (Kudos for the sultry rasp.)

My only qualm came near the end when the book took a sadly typical turn and repurposed overdone Christian mythos. It strikes me as lazy, like Jones is simply riffing off the stories she's heard growing up. It makes the book suddenly seem like a superbly executed "me too" novel. So much creativity went into the novel, it's a shame Jones phoned it in on the metaphysics.

However, this only happened at the end of the book, so I'm dinging only one star. I fear, though, that subsequent books in the series will integrate the derivative concepts more deeply, making them more central to the upcoming plots, given that this will already have been established to be the underlying struggle.

Still, the book is an amusing popcorn book.
