Major Connor MacKinnon despises his commander, Lord William Wentworth, beyond all other men. Ordered to rescue Wentworth's niece after the Shawnee take her captive, he expects Lady Sarah Woodville to be every bit as contemptible as her uncle. Instead, he finds a brave and beautiful lass in desperate peril. But the only way to free Sarah is for Connor to defeat the Shawnee warrior who kidnapped her - and claim her himself.
Torn by tragedy from her sheltered life in London, Lady Sarah is unprepared for the harshness of the frontier - or for the attraction she feels toward Connor. When they reach civilization, however, it is she who must protect him. For if her uncle knew all that Connor had done to save her, he would surely kill him.
But the flames of passion, once kindled, are difficult to deny. As desire transforms into love, Connor will have to defy an empire to keep Sarah at his side.

This series has taken me on a journey that I will not soon forget. All three books deliver heartwarming adventures filled with history, romance, and true life heartbreaks. The author develops characters that seem so real that many times I found myself feeling emotions I don't always feel from books. A few times I even laughed out loud.
Defiant is the third book of the Mackinnon's Rangers series and this book tells Connor's story. Without giving the plot away Connor meets Sarah in a extraordinary way and through frightening and suspenseful circumstances their love grows. It is a touching love story that no one should miss.
Although this is meant to be a trilogy, I've heard that there may be more books added to this series. I sincerely hope that this is true.
This book, as well as the whole series, is definitely worth the credits over and over again.
I'm proud to be a bookaholic...addicted, obsessed, passionate!!! My favorite way to relax & escape reality....
Defiant is third book in this romantic, sexy, and completely addictive MacKinnon’s Rangers series. This is installment is about the youngest MacKinnon, Connor and sweet angelic Sarah’s journey to find love. Such a powerful & breathtaking story that will touch your heart. I believe this is the best story in the series. Connor McKinnon, is a strong sexy warrior, whose loving, loyal and protective of the people he cares for. However, he constantly struggles with feeling remorseful of the brutal things that he has done to survive the war. This book begins with Lord William commanding Connor & Joseph to find his neice Lady Sarah and rescue her from her indian kidnappers. They go searching for her expecting to find a spoiled princess and instead find a courageous young woman. Lady Sarah Woodville is strong, compassionate and extremely courageous. She has endured a lot in such a short time. When Connor & Joseph arrive at the Shawnee village and overcome some trials to save Lady Sarah, who impressed them with her strength and bravery in the face of her captors abuse. Connor wins her freedom, but not without consequences which bring him and Sarah together. Over the long, dangerous trip back to Fort Edward, Connor and Sarah forge a relationship based on mutual attraction and admiration but know a future s impossible between a high born English lady and a Scottish frontiersman. But then a surprising turn of events causes Connor, along with help from his family and friends, to fight to have Sarah in his life forever no matter the danger and obstacles. Sarah finds her strength & peace in Connor and would love nothing more than just be just plain Sarah without her nobility. I was utterly enthralled from the very first page. Pamela Clare makes you feel the characters every emotion; their happiness and despair; their desires and fears, guilt and loneliness, along with each threat they faced. I was immersed in every single moment of this tale of danger, survival, betrayal, forgiveness, bravery, sacrifice, and most of all deeply passionate love story. Honestly, I don't believe many authors can paint a more vivid picture with words quite like Pamela Clare. She provides so much historical detail which includes even the savagery & violence that was an integral part of this period in colonial history. The way the author portrays each person shows great depth. Everyone can be described the same in ways. The natives have the same potential to be noble and honorable as the whites. Both show equal potential for acts of brutality. All the characters have totally invaded my heart! The narrator is phenomenal & absolutely superb!!! This story was beautifully told and brought tears to my eyes on numerous occasions while listening. Obviously, I highly recommend the whole MacKinnon series by Pamela Clare. I would start in order Surrender, Untamed and lastly Defiant. If you like historical romance combined with some steamy passion & a swoon worthy hero than you're going to want to purchase this these books especially this one:)
This is the third book of the MacKinnon brothers series. I enjoyed these stories immensely. Pamela Claire is now one of my favorite romance authors and Kaleo Giffith is my second favorite narrator: second only to the wonderful Davina Porter.
This book tells the story of the youngest MacKinnon, Conner. Conner has been embroiled longer in the war (French and Indian War) than the other two brothers and has been most negatively affected by it. The author has presented us with a most uncommon character in this genre, in imperfect hero. It makes him more believable and my favorite character next to Joseph, the MacKinnon's Native American blood brother. I hate reviews that give away so much of the story, so just let me say that the union of our hero and heroine is one of the most unusual I have found in romance novels. An interesting twist.
I thoroughly enjoyed the interaction of Conner and Joseph in this book. Although Joseph plays an important part in all the books, we see more of him in this installment. It would be nice to see the series continue with Joseph's story. Okay, there's a spoiler, Joseph survives the war. No big surprise. That's why we read romance novels--happy endings reign! One thing I won't spoil is Wentworth's fate.....
I am guessing this series will lose something if you try to pick up anywhere but the beginning. The author does recap the two earlier books, but there is such history between the characters, that you will want to read from book one.
reviews for fun
Book 3 of the MacKinnon's Rangers series did not disappoint. Kaleo Griffith is a wonderful narrator. I had not heard him until this series. He brought the Mackinnons and the Rangers to life. Historically very interesting. I would like to make an observation here. Why do authors these days have to be so sexually explicit in their books? I would have given the story 5 stars if it had not been for the explicit sex.
Reading is a must-have ESCAPE...
Book 3 is a wrap on the MacKinnon brothers. In all three editions, the honorable MacKinnon men prove their brawny mettle on the American frontier, manage to save a lass, fall in love, & win the girl.
"Defiant" focuses on the youngest MacKinnon, Connor, whose reproachable actions in Book 2 resurface and color his long-term perspective. Though Lord Wentworth has played an important part in the overall story, his character plays a particularly central role in this edition. If ever the reader sympathized with Wentworth, his actions in "Defiant" will have you questioning your compassion. Connor's story definitely offers more cultural details on Native Americans of the time than previously explored. More pages are dedicated to Joseph, the Mahican brother, leaving our curiosity piqued at the plot's end. Ian, Annie, Morgan, Amalie, Lt. Cooke, Dougie, McHugh, and others make appearances.
Clare & Griffith definitely deliver again!
Now this is how a truly wonderful action-packed historical adventure trilogy should end..... with drama, passion, tension, lies, conflicts, humor, intrigue, sex, romance, sacrifice, love and, in the end, as all your emotions have been rung from you, you are finally left with a touching HEA ending.
As this riveting tale unfolds it takes us to the conflicts of Colonial America and deposits us in 1760 where we meet Connor a honourable handsome Scottish Ranger and his task... to rescue Lady Sarah who's Lord Wentworth's Niece. Little does he know that more than his Warcraft skills and endurance will be needed on this mission that will have far reaching, sometimes devastating, sometimes thrilling consequences.
Pamela Clare's infusion of historical detail, richly described characters and scenes takes the listener on a perilous but rewarding journey that has spectacular imagery, with gut wrenching decisions, sad events but ultimately, out of the ashes of despair, a breathtaking love story evolves and alongside this is the unending support and enduring loyalty of true friends and family.
Grapevine says PC is continuing with Lord Wentworth's and then Joshua's stories - YABBER DABBER DOO let's hope this wasn't the end.
Worth a credit? I think by now you know my answer is going to be a big loud YES shouted from the top of the Grand Canyon - so it becomes an unmistakable and echoing YES yes yes yes yes.
I love books and love to get lost in the fantasy. I'm always looking for a new good story to bury myself in. :)
What a great story and ending to the series! Sarah and Connor were a wonderful couple and their story was so good it was hard to put down. I only stopped reading it long enough to sleep. :)
Sarah is a young lady of high society, the granddaughter of King George and the niece of Lord William (who you'll recognize if you've read the previous 2 books). Sarah is in the colonies because she was wrongly accused of scandal and her parents wouldn't believe her, instead beating her and sending her away to the colonies to stay with the Governor of New York and an old family friend.
Connor is the youngest of the McKinnon brothers. Their family were branded traitors in Scotland when there was a revolution against the non-Scottish King (King George) and all shipped to the colonies to live. Connor and his brothers were blackmailed by Lord William (holding a death sentence over their heads for a crime they didn't commit) in to lead a Ranger squad to help with the war between the British and the French. His older 2 brothers have been allowed to step down but Connor still leads the Rangers.
The story starts out with Sarah on her way to see her Uncle, Lord William, in order to seek his help with her family issues. Lord William has always been kind to Sarah and she hoped that he might believe her about the scandal that took place and be able to help her with her future. Sarah is kidnapped along the way and taken captive by some Shawnee Indians. Soon after the attack, Connor & Joseph are sent after the raiding party to save Sarah. They figure out where she's being taken but the relations with the tribe are iffy so they're not sure how easy the rescue will be. Unfortunately, the tribe has suffered at the hands of the British and they feel that they need to take Sarah in order to satisfy the debt since the man that kidnapped Sarah lost his wife. He wants Sarah to replace his wife but isn't kind to Sarah at all so it's obvious she won't be treated well. Connor and Joseph try to get her freed but in the end the only thing Connor can do is to challenge Sarah's captor for Sarah. Connor wins the fight but the leader isn't happy about it and makes it a condition that Connor has to take Sarah as his wife if he wants to keep her and that they must consummate the union with a witness. Connor is a good man and he can't stand the thought of forcing himself on Sarah any more than he could live with her being raped by the man who kidnapped her. He give her the choice on how to proceed but explains how dangerous (and unlikely to succeed) and escape attempt would be. Sarah isn't happy about her position but realizes that she doesn't have many options and being with Connor is a small price to pay for them all to get out of there alive. She agrees to consummate the "marriage" but with it being witnessed Connor has trouble making things as pleasant for Sarah as they could have been.
They leave the next morning but the tribe warriors aren't happy about their visit or the fact that Connor beat their warrior (who also happens to be their war chief). Connor and Joseph are sure they're going to be ambushed on the way home and they take a different route in an attempt to avoid the ambush party. They avoid them but can't escape when the warriors come after them. It's not easy for Sarah but she does her best to keep up with the men and not hold them up. They end up having to fight though and Sarah shows her bravery as she does what she needs to do in order to help them get through the fight alive. Connor and Sarah are a little distant at first because she's uncomfortable with the desire she feels for Connor and he thinks she's shying away from him because of their "wedding night" and so he tries to stay away from her. Soon they realize the mis-understanding and they know they shouldn't but they do end up indulging with each other as their headed back to the fort and safety. After some stressful travel they get to the fort and Sarah is happy to see her Uncle but is sad that her and Connor's time is over. Regardless of their attempts to not see each other any more (and not feel anything for each other) they have trouble keeping their feelings in check. Things aren't easy for the pair and when secrets come out things get even worse. There are some very difficult times in store for Sarah and Connor and his brothers and their wives even get pulled into things. Things look very bad for the couple but do turn out alright in the end after the unexpected happens. The ending of the story is wonderful and I was very happy to see Connor and Sarah get their well deserved HEA.
I loved this series and this was a great addition and conclusion of the series. Connor and Sarah were wonderful characters and their story great and very engrossing. I loved seeing how things turned out for everyone and was surprised (happily) at Lord William discovering that he has a heart after all (and used it!). I will warn you to have some tissues at the end (there were a couple places where I teared up) as it was wonderfully touching (I'm tearing up a little just remembering it). Overall this was a great book and great series and I'd recommend the whole series. 2 thumbs up! :D
* note - I thought the narrator did a very good job on the accents.
I loved reading Defiant, written by the very talented Pamela Clare. Kaleo Griffith brought this story to life by giving voice to the characters in this and the other MacKinnon's Rangers books...Surrender and Untamed. Both Pamela and Kaleo are gifted artists. I've eagerly waiting for Defiant in audio and it exceeded my expectations. Bravo Kaleo, brava Pamela.
