Publisher's summary

He’s fallen for a woman…

Anxious to meet her soon-to-be-husband, Dallas Leigh for the first time, mail-order bride Amelia Carson is en route to Fort Worth, Texas. When she steps off the train and locks eyes with her betrothed, she immediately feels drawn to him. But the cowboy standing before her isn’t Dallas. Instead, Dallas’ brother Houston has been sent to accompany her on the three-week journey to the ranch where she’ll begin her new life.

Who belongs to another...

The war Houston Leigh fought has left him with visible scars, a daily reminder of his cowardice on the battlefield. Denying his intense attraction to Amelia, he is determined to deliver her untouched, as promised. But during their long dangerous trip, he can’t help but admire her inner strength and fearlessness. And when she looks at him - as if she can see beyond his scarred face and read his innermost thoughts - he loses his heart to her. Now as they near the ranch, Houston must choose to remain loyal to his brother - or find the courage to fight for the woman he’s convinced is his destiny...

Thoroughly enjoyed!

I was almost deterred from listening to this book by one of the reviews, but I’m glad I decided to judge for myself. I’ve always liked Lorraine Heath and was intrigued by the Texas trilogy angle and the story line. I was not disappointed. This book captivated me from beginning to end. Unlike the other reviewer, who I must respectfully disagree with, I totally understood the characters motivations and decisions based on the masterful way Ms. Heath builds the story and the characters. I wholeheartedly recommend this book and am eager to listen to the next in the series!

Lorraine Heath's Western Novels

Enjoyed the listen and the story was warm and heart-tugging for me. I thought both characters, Ameilia and Houston were a bit naive with their assertions of love and what it really meant to both of them. Houston wanted to beat his cowardice but couldn't overcome it where Ameila was concerned because he could never admit that he loved her. It had to take her life being threatened before he could say the words.

I was a bit peeved at Ameilia. One minute she confesses her love to Houston, the other she goes off and marries his brother Dallas. Granted she was betrothed to him, she could have drawn the line and would have gone as far as to sleep with him and tolerate it knowing her heart belonged to Houston. Houston also...wait until she is with child or has the child..SMH.

In any case the narration was very nice, the story written well and I did enjoy it enough to give it 4-Stars. My only drawback is that it could have ended sooner rather than dragging out they way that it did.

Enjoyable

Much more of a romance story. Very little “sexy stuff”. I enjoyed the story and characters.

Wonderful Love Story

There does need to be a trigger warning for sexual assault. It's less than a paragraph but it's still enough to bring up old traumas.

The rest of the story is very well written and wonderfully narrated.

Loved it

A sweet almost clean romance with lots of buildup. Great narration as well. Left me wanting to continue the series immediately.

Just Lovely

First book in a long while that drew me in. First book in a long while wherein the main man isn’t a rogue heartthrob. It’s very good paced maybe until the last 5% but other than that truly enjoyed it. SPOILERS: half of Houston’s face was blown off during the civil war as a teenager. He’s withdrawn from the world. Older handsome brother Dallas sends him to pick up his mail order bride at the train depot. Their 3 weeks journey turns into a 5 week journey where they face the elements (danger) and they fall in love. They both basically know it but Houston won’t let her chain herself to him so to speak. He thinks she deserves someone as amazing as his older brother. She does marry Dallas but they don’t consummate them marriage bc she’s kidnapped. Dallas at this point has realized H and A are in love. D and H get A back. H and A marry. Heartwarming story.

After hundreds of audiobooks, this is the best

The narrator of this book is absolutely fabulous. Every character is done to perfection. I've read hundreds of audiobooks and this is one of the best! I'm excited to listen to the rest of the series. This is one of those times when I'm so glad I listened instead of read the book. Just the way she said "yep" for the mail characters had so much feeling! Brava!

Forbidden love is my weakness

I really enjoyed this book. I usually read books with a little more spice but the story was so entertaining I didn’t mind
