Publisher's summary

In this gripping and intensely atmospheric debut, disquiet descends on a small town after the suspicious death of a beautiful young doctor, with all clues pointing to the reclusive young man who abandoned the community in chase of big city dreams but returned for the first love he left behind. Perfect for fans of All Good People Here and Where the Crawdads Sing.

One peaceful morning, in the small, Puget Sound town of Point Orchards, the lifeless body of Dr. Erin Landry is found hanging from a tree on the property of prodigal son and failed writer, Elijah Leith. Sheriff Jim Godbout’s initial investigation points to an obvious suicide, but upon closer inspection, there seem to be clues of foul play when he discovers that the circumstances of the beautiful doctor’s death were ripped straight from the pages of Elijah Leith’s own novel.

Out of money and motivation, thirty-three-year-old Elijah returns to his empty childhood home to lick the wounds of his futile writing career. Hungry for purpose, he throws himself into restoring the ramshackle cabin his father left behind and rekindling his relationship with Nakita, the extraordinary girl from the nearby reservation whom he betrayed but was never able to forget.

As the town of Point Orchards turns against him, Elijah must fight for his innocence against an unexpected foe who is close and cunning enough to flawlessly frame him for murder in this scintillating literary thriller that seeks to uncover a case of love, loss, and revenge.

Barely finished

There wasn’t enough character development. I didn’t care what happened. And the change of past to present didn’t work for me in this book. I almost gave up many times.

This novel had everything I love. A gripping mystery, a realistic love story, and likable, interesting, main characters.

Needed more development

A good story with lots of potential, but not fully developed. There were loose threads and lost opportunities. I was hoping for more depth.

It was okay

This is a story with a lot of details that some may find enjoyable I found it uninteresting. Not much of a mystery and not much of a believable love story. I finished it and didn’t dislike but can’t recommend.

Pulls You In

A engaging story from beginning to end with twists and turns that only make it more believable and compelling. I appreciate so much that the language is free from the extreme foul language used in many crime stories.

Intriguing mystery novel set among a charming coastal town

Middletide’s nonlinear storytelling adds depth to its captivating narrative. It is a well-written story enhanced by the vivid imagery of a charming coastal town.

The unraveling of this intriguing mystery is a story of love, loss, revenge, and forgiveness. Highly recommend!

Great listen

This is such a good book. Every time I had to do other things so I couldn’t listen, all I could think about were the characters. I will remember this story for a long time!!!

implausible

So many things to say about this book and narration, but just don't waste your time / money. The plot/ story line is completely implausible, it's like author failed to do any research regarding the criminal justice system, and Native American Heritage. This book would be more appropriately categorized as fantasy with stereotypical and insulting under tones. seriously, this left such a bad taste in my mouth, I will never read this author again.
