Publisher's Summary

An alluring laird....

He was known throughout the kingdom as Hawk, legendary predator of the battlefield and the boudoir. No woman could refuse his touch, but no woman ever stirred his heart - until a vengeful fairy tumbled Adrienne de Simone out of modern-day Seattle and into medieval Scotland.

Captive in a century not her own, entirely too bold, too outspoken, she was an irresistible challenge to the 16th-century rogue. Coerced into a marriage with Hawk, Adrienne vowed to keep him at arm's length - but his sweet seduction played havoc with her resolve.

A prisoner in time....

She had a perfect "no" on her perfect lips for the notorious laird, but Hawk swore she would whisper his name with desire, begging for the passion he longed to ignite within her. Not even the barriers of time and space would keep him from winning her love. Despite her uncertainty about following the promptings of her own passionate heart, Adrienne's reservations were no match for Hawk's determination to keep her by his side.

Great Scot! Don't miss our other titles in the Highlander series.

What the Critics Say

"Phil Gigante's handling of the prose in Moning's clever paranormal romance is smooth and engaging, but it is his character voicings that truly make this recording one to remember." (AudioFile)

"Not the best of the series, but more-than-decent."

While this isn't the best of Moning's Highlander series, it's a more-than-decent start.I've certainly found Moning to be the best of the Highlander genre.

"Save yourself!! Look BEYOND this book!!"
What disappointed you about Beyond the Highland Mist?

It is possible to write a romance that assumes the reader/listener has some intelligence and is looking for a diversion from everyday life. This one does not. The storyline was poor and the nature of the characters was completely unrealistic and shallow. I don't care that it is a fairytale romance, it is possible to give the characters some depth without taking away from the story. The book also played out every cliche in the romance genre ad nauseum.

What do you think your next listen will be?

I listened to The First Confessor by Terry Goodkind

What didn’t you like about Phil Gigante’s performance?

I couldn't understand the King and Queen's voices because of some editing quirk. They were supposed to sound disembodied and powerful, but I just couldn't understand what they were saying. As far as the narrator, his accents were a little inconsistent, but he was all right.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Beyond the Highland Mist?

Since it would be unreasonable to cut the whole book, I guess I will go with the scene where he is gentling a horse and his kilt flies up and she sees he is hung like one... MAJOR EYE ROLL!!!

    Any additional comments?

I spent the vast majority of this listen rolling my eyes and counting the minutes until it was over. I am SHOCKED this book got 4 stars.

    "Boring"

I had hoped there would be a great story line that went with this romance, however, most of this was the he wants her, she wants him but won't say so, back and forth. There was no mystery, no intrigue, it was boring. Even the so called romance was boring. I listened because I paid for it. I can't say anything about her other series, but this one is not worth it.

    "Cheap Thrills"

Fun in concept, but only moderate in delivery. Personally I like a little less explicit disclosure and more subtlety in my romances. Every kiss seems to be a battle of the wills between the love (or sex or power) -starved. Plot offers promising twists and layers but the reader's breathless urgency mixed with the every-touch-a-love scene got old. If you are looking for an ongoing romp between the legs without much intellect, it is quite fun. And don't be lured by the "highlander" motif -- it is a setting, a premise for fairy manipulations of human fates. Gives the author little more than the chance to titilate the reader with worn out bawdy references to what men have under kilts. Depends on what you are looking for, but I think I will pass on the sequels.

    "Narration ruins this book"

It is hard to say if I would have enjoyed this book with a different narrator. This guy is absolutey terrible. His female voice for Adrienne is AWFUL. It is whiny and definately does not depict the supposed "strong woman of the 20th centurye". I am through part 1 and suffering the rest. I had high hopes for this series and I only hope the next books narrator does a much better job.

"No way two people could actually be this clueless"

By the time I got to the middle of this book I wanted to scream with agitation, frustration and impatience. NO ONE could be as stupid and misbegotten as these two people. The silly assumptions and mis-communications ruined what could have been a really good story line. I know Ms. Moning has to be a better writer than this. I assume she is trying to stay true to the romance formula but really this took it too far. How can people who read these books be satisfied with the same plot over and over again.

I ran out of other fantasy paranormal books so I turned to this one. Unfortunately, it fell too close to my read of Echo in the Bone by Diana Gabaldon and that's like comparing Stephen Hawking's superior mind! to a first grade primer.

I'm going to try and remember that frustration the next time I'm tempted to read a romance again. I gave it two stars because it had a good idea for the story. I'm just sorry she couldn't flesh it out better.

"Just OK - Narration Not So Great"

I like the books (the whole series). I read the entire series last year & am now listening to the books. Of course, they're exactly the same, and I still enjoy the stories but what knocks my review down to 3 stars is the narration...has anyone else noticed (and been cracked up by) the narrator's almost Jamaican accent when what he's going for is a Scottish accent? And the voices he does are pretty lame. But the Jamaican accent thing...I've actually had to stop listening to laugh!

    "Beyond the Highland Mist"

I know from what I read before I purchased this book that there is a following for this story but it is not going to be me. I could not even force myself to listen to it on my trip and ended up listening again to an Odd Thomas book that I had recently finished. I imagine if you are a person who likes to read the "steamy" romance novels .. you know, the ones where the two main characters start out fighting or for one reason or another think they hate each other. Then they find each other irresistible but can't let it show. Later they start to soften up to each other but something happens and they again are at each other's throat ... back and forth, over and over and over. That is pretty much a review of the book, well as much of it as I could stand to listen to. Terribly boring and predictable.

    "Beyond the Highland Mist (Unabridged)"

As a fan of the Highlander movies and television series, I thought I would try some of the books in this series. I was terribly disappointed. If the author would have left the cheesy romance part out of it, it might have been an ok story. The writing is so predictable...."throbbing shaft of manhood" and her "sweet honeypot" - it was just laughable. I went through the book because I paid for it, but I will happily delete it forever. Now, if you're into romance novels, you might enjoy it, but this is not what I was expecting.
