Publisher's summary

Yawning, lip-licking, sneezing, even scratching are just a few of the 30-plus signals that dogs use to communicate with one another.

With On Talking Terms With Dogs, you can learn to recognize these signals and use them yourself to interact with your dog. Norwegian dog trainer and behaviorist Turid Rugaas has made it her life work to study canine social interaction. She coined the phrase calming signals to describe the social skills, sometimes referred to as body language, that dogs use to avoid conflict, invite play, and communicate a wide range of information to other dogs and also humans.

Every dog needs his human to listen to this book! Learn to identify situations that are stressful to your dog, so that you can resolve or avoid them. Rehabilitate a dog that has lost her ability to read or give calming signals. Become a keen observer of canine behavior at home, in the community, and among dogs to get better behavior and build a solid relationship.

Very informative

The content was very informative and helpful! A few errors with the recording, but nothing that hindered the audiobook.

Opening Doors to Understanding

What an enlightening and refreshing guide to better understanding how our dogs yearn to adapt to us and how special they are with how they socialize with other dogs and us. This revealed so much clarity for how my older pup, Bella, ran the show, in our home, in the yard, the dog park, etc. Dogs are amazing and this book is too.

calling all dog groomers!

Very helpful with interactions. There is a DVD also. The narration is easier for me personally to understand. I just love Turid Ruguus.

Need to study this book and learn

I think this is a good foundation book and give guidance in the cues that dogs pick up on and what our actions relay to them. I need to listen and study this more. I will probably either get the ebook or paperback.

Crisis Response Dog prep

I learned so much! I am preparing to train my dog for crisis response so learning his body language is vital. I hope to practice using calming signals myself. Thank you!

How to be a Dog Whisperer

I learned so much from this about how dogs communicate and how we can communicate with them — especially when needed to lower their stress. The author has decades of experience and is internationally acclaimed as a trainer.

The reader was okay. He ran sentences together and missed the correct intonation sometimes.

Talking with dogs

This is the second time I've read this book, and as many times as I have stopped and rewound it it's realistically the fifth or sixth time or more. I've learned quite a lot from reading many books about my fur babies and I think the most important books are the ones that teach us how to talk with our pets. this has been a good book to do that and I may just read it many more times or at least until I can proficiently talk with my fur babies.
