The book your dog wishes you would read

As a professional dog trainer myself, I’m glad someone addressed the cause of most bad behavior in dogs comes from the people that own them. It’s full of good common sense rules on what NOT to do with a dog. Every human behavior leaves a profound mark on a dog. Both positive and negative. I wish this book was given to every new puppy owner, especially if they have children. My only downside to the book was the authors decision to narrate the book herself. The very articulate yet very heavy British accent was many times a distraction away from the valuable text being presented.

Enlightening and truly useful

Louise Glazebrook reads her book clearly and with frankness. This professional dog behaviorist wants us to care about the well-being of the dog from the individual to the genus. I love my dog and dogs in general and needed no convincing. What I have taken away from the book is the importance of breeding, making a genuine and respectful connection with my dog, and learning to read the signals from my dog of what’s going on and what he might need from me. Having done extensive obedience training together I thought I already had the relationship sorted but Louise’s book is helping me to take our interactions to a level of greater enrichment than before. More time for sniffing, giving treats differently, better diet, and reading other dogs for friendliness or something different. Thank you for sharing your wisdom Louise!

Not as helpful when you already own a dog

There are some gems of information scattered about the book but the author is very concerned with how dogs are bred. I was hoping that, alongside the dog’s perspective, she would offer more solutions on maybe how to train dogs or how to help alleviate certain behaviors.

One example is a dog who wants to say hello to every dog but sometimes growls and lunges at other dogs while on a leash. She says that it’s because they may have been given free reign to say hello to every dog in the past but now is unfairly being stopped from doing so, and the growls and lunges are due to frustration of not being allowed to do what it wants. So what’s the solution? The book doesn’t say.

This book is mostly for people who are considering a dog, and less helpful for those who already own a dog.

Not bad but not great

I was looking to this book as a to do list and learning experience on how and what to do with a new rescue dog. It gave some good ideas and views but I still don’t know how to help my anxious pup.

Dog now gets more exercise and better food

I would listen to the audiobook while walking Chester and Gizmo. Before then, I was ridden with guilt for not walking them consistently. This book helped me get off my butt and treat my dogs better. They’re now getting more nutritional food too. I want them around for as long as possible ❤️. I would love to read and listen to more books by this author. Specifically reactive adult dogs.

This book gives great philosophies about dog ownership. Additional books that goes deeper into the subcategories would be so appreciated :)
