A witch with a side hustle

Star needs another paying gig while she finishes her witch training. Why not at a funeral home? It fits her goth image, and the funeral director is sort of hot...even if he does wear a suit and tie.

Less than a day on the job as makeup artist to the dead, and Star discovers one of their accidental death clients didn’t die accidentally.

Before she knows it, she’s neck-deep in paranormal intrigue and her completely human, way-too-nice-for-his-own-good boss is right there with her.

Funeral Home Fun

This was a random find through Audible suggesting based on my tendency to listen to supernatural cozy mysteries and I have to say I was pleasantly surprised by this first volume. Although this is a super quick story I found myself really drawn into a world of magic and political intrigue that felt more engrossing then many cozy mysteries that are twice this length (in fact I noticed amongst the other three volumes in this series currently available they are all closer to short stories that might have been better as an anthology-for those who enjoy Kindle reading you can purchase the entire series for less than a dollar and save some audible money/credits). The main character is interesting and engaging though I kind of didn't understand the need for the goth girl discussion. I also laughed when the author stated she lives in the middle of nowhere Buda Texas (pronounced Bew-Duh) a place I lived for many years and far from rural an exploding suburb just outside of Austin. I really like the dynamic that is growing between the funeral home owner and the protagonist's ex boyfriend who is a magical enforcer. Cate is creating a really intriguing world where magic meets mundane and the magical law is not exactly judicious but more wild west. I am interested to meet more creatures of this universe and discover what new mysteries lay ahead. There are some fun and eccentric personalities that were lots of fun to be introduced to and I will definitely be checking out some of Cate's other series as well as continue with Night Shift Witch. For those looking for a short tale with an intriguing supernatural mystery world this might just be for you.
